My absolute greatest of all time when it comes to Ipswich Town. I'm so lucky I saw him play many times. The very first paragraph of this sums it up . I've never seen this write up.

Our finest and that is saying something. We have had some truly great, great players down the years. Crawford, Phillips, Mariner, Mill, Butcher, Burley, Thijssen, Muhren, Wark, Stewart, Holland and many, many more, but Kevin Beattie will always be my ultimate favorite. Had the lot. A true Ipswich Town legend. I give a nod every time I walk past his statue. Only wish it was up when he was still with us. The Beat will forever be my No.1.

I nipped into the club shop last Wednesday and as always walked across and said hello to Kevin’s statue.

He was extraordinary. When he got the ball and started moving up the field with it you could feel the crowd draw breath. I only ever saw that with a certain G Best. The players he marked looked nothing against him - and he played the finest of the time.

Is he the greatest player I’ve seen play for Ipswich Town? By a hairs breath that’ll always be Paul Mariner for me, but how lucky was I to see so many truly great players.

I would have seen him play, but sadly don’t remember. There’s a lot I do remember about the ground, the crappy bogs behind Churchmans, my regular spot atop a milk crate leaning on one of the square metal barriers, the stand-alone floodlights and looking across to the the N stand. I remember Cooper and Burley bombing up and down the line. But otherwise not a lot about the players for some reason.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Sir Bobby did not agree with you.

He was an absolute colossus, one of the best players I've seen at Ipswich or anywhere. If someone at Liverpool had turned up to meet him off the train he would have had stands and Mersey ferries named after him.

He didn’t and neither do most people, so I’m probably wrong - but I stand by my opinion having seen them both play in their prime. Wonderful players who could have played in the modern game with total ease.

Here’s him scoring against Wolves in 1981. Also features a Cooper penalty save.

Remember it well. The atmosphere that day was special. Truly great time to be around. Football was football and men were men. Proper times.

Cooper was actually our fastest player at one time, but I don't think we ever put him on the wing!

Agree, my favourite all time player too.

We all called him Bomber Beattie - he'd just put his head down and run with the ball , brilliant.
Scored some cracking, really powerful goals too.
