The news management is both impressive and frustrating 12:30 - Jan 14 with 4119 viewsDarkBrandon

I've no idea what is going on with the signing of Billy Jean, but I've rarely known a transfer like it. We had news around the time of the medical, and a little from Villa's end but since then ... nothing (apart from the local saying they expected it to go through).

It is impressive in a way that nobody has leaked anything, although it would be fascinating to know a bit more.

Fascinating (or slightly scarey) how the club have persuaded the local reporters to toe the line

There does come a time to break ranks and tell the ignorant masses what the feck is going on

There is, of course, the other option - that there's simply nothing new to report. Talks ongoing, no conclusion yet reached.

I thought the latest news was a fee hasn’t been agreed? Villa want a certain % sell on and we’ve said no

We haven't even had that. We know that a fee has been agreed with Villa. The medical has been completed. He will have a very good idea what the terms would be having spoken to us last transfer window.

It seems like something has changed. He (or his agent) are keeping their options open. Or want more money. Or we want to pay him less. Villa are holding on for a replacement. Something in the medical has come up. It is just paperwork to do with quickly moving between clubs. Someone knows, and it isn't us.

But it has already been reported that a fee was agreed and medical was done, so not sure what else you’re looking for?

When there’s news to report, im sure you’ll hear about it.

That was "reported" by a twitter account of dubious provenance. It seems unlikely it is true, but who knows.

Also .. you don't usually let the player have a medical and have the manager say "yeah, it is right to sell him" if a fee isn't agreed.

Think the real point is how easily the local press are silenced.
Up to the point of fees agreed, medical done fully understand the radio silence, after that, well make up your own mind

I don't really understand the point of silencing local press. National press (ie Fabrizio, Ornstein and co) are going to pick everything up anyway at this level, namely through agents.

And again, what else are you looking for? Pretty sure Phil and others have already stated the club still expect the deal to go through.

If they weren’t reporting on fees and medicals I’d say fair point, but they’ve all reported the main points of this transfer and no less than any other journo across the country would report on.

Really don't buy into this idea that the local media are at Ashton's beck and call. I think it's often that the threshold for a new story is higher for the media than it might be for us on here!

You think the local media have information on this transfer which they aren't communicating because they think their readers won't be interested??

Not quite what I meant. "Discussions are still ongoing on some contractual points" doesn't really make a 'story' for a newspaper or on here. A typical story would run to several hundred words. I think it's quite likely this is still the position here and therefore running a story to say nothing has changed doesn't really hit editorial thresholds.

I think the local media simply don't have anything further to communicate on this transfer. Not everything is a conspiracy.

Whether or not it applies for this particular transfer, it feels pretty clear that there are new parameters within which the local press are expected to operate if they wish to retain their current level of access to the club.

The coverage of certain negative occurrences has certainly been different to how it has been under previous regimes, and I understand that fans of Ashton's previous clubs (Watford in particular?) have mentioned him having a similar attitude to their own local media outlets.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Does it matter that we know or not?

Also Emery's statement rules out the hold-up being at Villa's end, if they want the Philogene move done to get the other deal through.

There's no evidence whatsoever that they have been silenced. Has Phil also been silenced? He's reported on the story today.

If there's no news, there's no news to report. Commercial negotiations sometimes take time to be concluded. This is a £20m+ commercial deal. Buying an average house on entirely standard terms typically takes longer than this will take (assuming it does go through).

It may be Philogene's agent being a d***. It may be something else. Yes it's clearly taking longer than we (the fans) would like. That does not mean that there is a conspiracy.

If the club had managed to keep its interest in Philogene quiet for longer, the first we heard about it might be him holding up a scarf and waxing lyrical about the training facilities. In those circumstances, the transfer may have taken exactly as long as it will do with us having heard of the fee being agreed early doors. The fact is, nobody on here knows:
a) how long the mean average time is between fee agreed and transfer concluded;
b) how long it will take in this case between those two events; or
c) if there is a big difference between those two, why that has occurred.

Not necessarily - there might still be fees owed from the sale in the summer or contingent bonuses that the agent is trying to get out of Villa. I suspect no club wants to be held hostage by an agent even if they are trying to get someone in.
