Terry Butcher fishing on the River Gipping on 23:00 - Feb 5 with 4119 views | Swansea_Blue | It was a cracking bit of river back in the 80s. I spent more time than I should have, lumping all my tackle through town on the number 5 bus and then back again, leaving a stinking puddle of fishy keepnet water in the baggage storage area under the stairs. TWTD. I had a walk along there a few years back now. Completely unrecognisable with the new (ish) Riverside Road developments. The old factories were still there when I used to fish there. And the river is fairly inaccessible now. Full of weed and rushes and the willows left to run wild. Maybe a good thing for some of the wildlife, but it’s a shame kids don’t get the chance to enjoy the childhoods we used to have.

Nice memories. Spent many an afternoon fishing along there as a kid with my granddad. Can’t recall the name of the leather factory but my nan worked there. Makes you wonder how clean the water was with all that industry there!

I still fish it but from the Elton Water bank which is opposite Riverside Road. The Elton Water bank is controlled by Gipping Angling Preservation Society and has padlocked access. You can buy a "river only" GAPS season ticket quite cheaply. Fished really well last season through November and December, but haven't really had much opportunity to fish this season. Given the number of undesirables you see hassling people when fishing from the opposite bank, I certainly wouldn't contemplate fishing from the Riverside Road side nowadays, whereas I practically lived there at weekends in my teens.

We used to have matches on that bank back in the 80s. Good to hear GAPS is still going. I did a school Geography project with them and went to George Alderson’s house to interview him. He was a gent. I spent way too much time on their waters. The river, Barham Pits, etc. Alderson lake was my favourite - they were some lovely tench in there.

I didn’t realise it was a leather factory, so that fills in a gap thanks. There were a couple of outfalls - probably best not to ask what went in the river! The fish seemed healthy enough though.

Terry Butcher fishing on the River Gipping on 13:33 - Feb 6 with 2948 views | ghostofescobar | Just for the merest of split seconds I saw the word "fisting" rather than fishing. Fishing makes this a far more pleasant story. Still think I might need a sit down though.

I’ve been looking through some old photos. It’s changed a bit! General views are from ‘85 or ‘86. Downstream of Riverside Road car park, derelict factory on the left. Upstream RR section from the upstream end by the bridge to Boss Hall: Boss Hall section, looking back towards Boss Hall car park and the bridge (totally different now and much more vegetated) Nice cords lol! More to show the people in the background - it was often busy. People don’t get out in the fresh air as much any more. This was Boss Hall, 28th Sept 85. Seriously hot weather, I rember it well. (We’re getting battered by storms here now at the end of Sept).

Terry Butcher fishing on the River Gipping on 20:47 - Feb 6 with 2348 views | gainsboroughblue | That used to be my walking route to PR in the 80's when I lived Bramford Road end of town. Used to be a challenging and muddy walk as well at times with more than the odd chance of slipping down the bank as the footpaths weren't particularly safe in areas. It's completely paved now and lovely. Done several walks from London Road Bridge down to Sproughton/Bramford and even to Blakenham if I've had time and got the bus back.

2 and a half hours, possibly longer. Such a shame there's no pubs on that route.

Yep, negatively stereotyping a whole section of society based on where they come from. The literal definition is racialisation. Maybe it was meant as a joke, but it wasn't a very good one.

Great pictures! Although it's very different now to those pictures, it was even more so prior to some of the flood prevention work they did at Riverside Road. The bankside (especially between the rail bridge and the Riverside Road entrance) was a far more natural environment, with numerous bushes between pegs. They were all cut them all down and the bank straightened, sometime in the late 70's at a guess. It used to be be really popular before then, and I would often leave home on my cycle before the crack of dawn to get there at first light and try and get a good peg.

Terry Butcher fishing on the River Gipping on 18:02 - Feb 7 with 1408 views | ford6600 | Was a GAPS member and fished further upstream Sproughton? several evenings in June/ July 1981. Had many nice Tench up to 3lb 8oz, a few amazing looking Rudd up to 1lb 7oz, a Bream 2lb and a Pike 2lb all on bread! Never fished downstream by the leather? factory, the outlets into the river were stained red so not sure what was getting washed into the river. Remember fishing at Barham Pits. Even overnight once; but too cold, fishless and too near railway track. Also down at Gaps water at Kingsfleet good for Tench, fishing from boat. Would be a good pastime for current players or as a group activity, especially fishing a well stocked Carp water.
