I've mentioned it before, but have you thought about Southport (with plenty of hotels and guest houses), which is on the Northern Line of Merseyrail to Bank Hall Station (just over a mile away from the ground)?
I'm in the fortunate position of being able to stay with my mother-in-law in Crosby which is also on the Northern Line and only three or four stops away [Post edited 25 Mar 2025 11:39]

so for anyone struggling to book somewhere to stay there are loads of airbnb options available…just booked one really close to city centre for just over a ton for the weekend…friday/saturday night…👍 | | | |
