Presumably Villa player then tapped it into the empty net but the ref gave a foul? That certainly wasn’t a foul.

That's football.

We can contrive to blame the ref, but I would say Martinez is more to blame.

They may not have won anyway, they did concede two goals.

Its a hard pill to swallow, but that's football. The media will try to put 100% of the blame on the ref, but thats not the case.

"FA Rules: A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball with the hand(s) when:

the ball is between the hands or between the hand and any surface (e.g. ground, own body) or by touching it with any part of the hands or arms except if the ball rebounds from the goalkeeper or the goalkeeper has made a save."

Kind of open to interpretation. Between the hands? It was between the hands..... but he wasn't touching it.

That's football though, you win some, you lose some. Hey ho.

And yet again, where was VAR?

I would assume “between the hands” means touching it, otherwise Uri Geller would be a keeper. It highlights how ridiculously subjective the Laws of the Game are though.

And yet again, where was VAR?

Ref blundered by blowing the whistle before the “goal” so VAR couldn’t intervene.

If he’d been “in control” of the ball he’d have been able to hold onto it!

The attacker was easily able to get the ball without fouling.

Keeper was way too casual/complacent. Why didn't he just follow the basics and fall forwards onto the ball as he went to clutch it?

For a species that’s risen to the top of the food chain despite not being the strongest predator, that’s unravelled many mysteries of the universe and has even visited or send probes throughout our own solar system, we’re incredibly dumb sometimes. Can’t even write some processes and rules that make sense.

It’s the sort of decision (totally wrong of course) that if united were in contention for CL and it had gone against them everyone would have laughed their head off (naturally)

I was being a little facetious.

It doesn't matter now anyway.

It always over the course of a season but a huge call with it on the line.

The irony is if the ref took a little longer look at it and awarded the free kick after it was rolled into the net the PL could have praised VAR for correcting a potential 100M decision.
