Here is a table of the number of signings for each Championship club recorded on Wikipedia since 1st June.

The average number of signings is 6.7 - we have signed 6, so pretty much on the mark. That does not include Button, by the way.

I might do some more detailed analysis on timelines later if I get the chance.

I’m not to fussed by it. But I don’t think the quality of the signings matches MA’s early close season rhetoric. Didn’t someone (Joe?) say the list they’d seen was ‘scary’. There’s still time, but at the moment we haven’t had a ‘wow’ player come in have we.

When was the last time we had a ‘wow’ player come in? Omari maybe to a certain extent, but as a club, we don’t tend to buy established players but rather turn them into better players.

Thinking about it when we signed Kalvin Phillips I honestly thought ‘wow’ and that KM will be able to reignite his career.

It is a bit harsh judging Ashtons rhetoric against something Joe said!

I think we need to be careful with our language on this topic.
Someone will inevitably post a link from Twitter that claims we're in for an east European striker called Rhetoric.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

What about departures? We may have signed six, but we've lost more. Delap, Morsy, Muric, Broady, Omari, Massimo, Slicker, Burgess, etc
How does that compare?

Norwich signed 11, but not sure the quality is there. They just lost 3-0 to Southampton in the cup, and looked poor. 3/3 defeats at Carrow Road.

There are only 22 teams on that list. If we assume the other 2 teams have made zero, the average is actually 6.1

People are confusing having an ambitious list with how difficult it is to get those ambitious signings through the door. Cajuste would have been on that list, possibly Matiswa too, but Cajuste is a ridiculous signing for the Championship.

The fact that the club wanted to be ambitious at all, despite relegation should be applauded, not used as a stick to beat them with.

You do realise departures are inevitable? Not least because the squad is limited to 25, so if we wanted some new players in, we needed some to move out. There are a couple that left maybe unexpectedly, but other than we need to space to make way for all these signing some are screaming for …

Really? Don’t get me wrong, he’s a very good player and should shine in the championship but unsure whether he has that ‘wow’ factor.

Missing Leicester who have signed Begovic and I assume Sheffield Weds who are under embargo.

Somwwhat irrelevant, though, without knowing what each team needs. We stubbornly play one up front and as of now have no back-up striker. Tick tock….

The only teams in the division currently with parachute money are ourselves, Leicester, Southampton and Sheffield United (reduced 2nd year payment).

Leicester have none, being under an embargo, us and SheffU 6 each and Soton 4. Averaging 4 or, if you ignore Leics, 5.3.

If it helps on timeline, transfers in the Championship below.

So *very* roughly, most clubs still average around 2 incoming transfers to go.

2025/26
In - 322
Out - 268

2024/25:
In - 363
Out - 342

2023/24:
In - 374
Out - 338

2022/23:
In - 382
Out - 331

Leicester and SheffWed are both transfer embargoed, so think that would rather skew the result.

He’s a PL level player. Impressive to bring him to a Championship team. It’s relative. As a signing at this level, it is a ‘wow’ signing. We’re not going to be signing Isak, Eze or Mbeumo

This is the biggest point re. window performance, we now need to produce a number of high quality signings because we've lost these players. If we still had Morsy, Broadhead, Omari and Burgess, our squad would look a lot healthier.

And because we've lost those players, even if we do get in the signings we need, they take a long time to integrate in to the system and style. This is why some have been pişşed off. The 'waiting for the right player until the last minute' argument is fine if we were in a position of strength and needed to just top up the quality in a couple of positions, but we've weakened ourselves and then we're also playing catch up because the new players haven't had chance to play games together. We might be looking at November until everything starts to click, by which point we'll be off the pace.

Doesn’t really mean a lot. Hull for example have signed 12 players, but total cost is about £3.5m across 2 players and another 10 on freebies, they have also lost about 20 players across their 1st team and U21s, they are not in the same market for players as us.

Realistically we are probably competing with lower 3rd of PL teams for players, without the attractiveness of PL publicity and wages which makes it much harder to attract.

We have a good squad which we need to strengthen but that takes time to find the right players from clubs knowing that we have more ££ than most in the division.
