Mattisawa and Taylor combo 17:16 - Nov 1 with 1442 viewsstiff_talking

If you take the games Mattisawa and Taylor have played together including pre-season games I think we have won every game. I think it’s about 6 wins in 6!

Not quite, we lost to Preston, drew to Southampton, drew to Birmingham.

It didn't really work for us as a double pivot earlier in the season and I'm not entirely sure why it's working now.

Thought Nunez in the 10 worked well..
He's a midfielder and as such will sniff out a bit of danger. So, imo, makes our whole midfield that bit more solid..
Using Szmodics and Akpom in the 10.. Well, imo, they are more interested in everything we do going forwards. But are just not hard wired to do the tracking back and helping out the pivot, naturally.
So pleased for Nunez to get going..
And I agree that Taylor alongside Azor looked comfortable. And gave a bit more energy to the MF.. Two in a row that Taylor has done well.

azor has got an understanding of the English game. That's a big help.

Plus we have a midfielder in the 10 role which helps too.

Because Nunez is in front of them? Because it is weaker opposition? Because they have developed an understanding?

Maybe some of all those and some.

” …I'm not entirely sure why it's working now.”

Coaching and the training ground maybe …

Obviously, but it's not really a pivot that "should" work IMO.They're really similar and I'd still expect us to move back to Cajuste/Nunez at some point. Glad it's working for now, but I can't see it as the long term answer.

They're not similar tho

Azor loves being a dm
Taylor is more of a roamer

It's the closest pairing we have to morsy and luongo.

Why shouldn't it work? Matusiwa is more defensive than Taylor but both are solid and Taylor has attacking threat. Nunez in the 10 role is attacking but with more defensive awareness than our other 10 options (except perhaps Humphreys).

Why would you go back to Cajuste?

How about going back to a successful promotion winning midfield ( just 2 years ago)of Mass and Morsy. Both good footballers but they were similiar. Did the hard yards, dirty work .. cleaned up and gave the ball to the forward players. Why shouldn't it work?

I think there are a few factors at play. The forward players sticking their chances away helps, and I've been banging that drum for a while - we've not been clinical enough. We've conceded bad goals, but some have come from an Ipswich attack that ultimately failed, and we've been hit on the break.

Also I think it's relative - Cajuste has had some nice moments but I've never been convinced that he's been consistently good. Matusiwa is really reliable in my view, but it (wholly reasonably) took him a few games to find his feet. So if this pivot didn't work in the first few games, it might have been down to that, coupled with the fact that maybe we've allowed ourselves to assume that it might be Taylor's fault, as he's always been a bit of a nearly man.

You never know. One or two bad games doesn't make you a bad player, and one or two swallows does not a summer make. But the signs are promising. Nunez in the 10, and Taylor/Matusiwa in the pivot, that's 2 wins on the bounce. Couple that with Kipre being favoured over Greaves, and there is cause for optimism. Coming from a miserable g*t like me, that's not a bad sign...
