| Elections tomorrow for someone who doesn't follow politics too much 20:59 - May 6 with 2798 views | TresBonne | I'm coming to the most political place I know. 1) What's the general consensus of how they're going to go? 2) What's the likelihood of Reform winning a lot of votes? 3) What will it mean for Starmer should Labour not do so good? 4) In the grand scheme of things for the country, what do they mean? | | | | |
| Elections tomorrow for someone who doesn't follow politics too much on 21:07 - May 6 with 1649 views | ITFC_Essex | To be honest, for all the bluster, you should probably vote based on the candidate who is best suited to representing you on your local Council rather than back a national trend. It's a local election, and shouldn't be treated like a dummy-General Election like some are treating it (Reform couldn't care a dump about our Councils), your local services are at stake! | |

| Elections tomorrow for someone who doesn't follow politics too much on 21:18 - May 6 with 1605 views | Zx1988 | 1) It's a tough call. Having spoken to those on my Town Council who are running for the County seats, they're fairly confident of getting elected and are Labour/Lib Dem. That said, they're well-known faces with a very good reputation and track record, so I wouldn't read too much into the party politics of it. 2) Rather high, I reckon. Even though Reform are running and positioning their campaign as if it's a General Election, there are enough dissatisfied people out there who'll either want to send a message to Labour, are massive racists, or have just been hoodwinked by Nigel. 3) Following the Mandelson issue a couple of weeks back, I think Starmer will be on very shaky ground if Labour face enough of a wipe-out to start losing councils. I've no doubt that the potential alternatives have spent the last couple of weeks shoring up their positions and sharpening their knives. 4) I think it's really hard to say. If Reform do well, and well enough to topple Starmer, the new PM could either double-down and try even harder to win over Reform voters, or take the sensible step of taking Labour back towards the centre ground. In the short term it could be more impactful at County/District level if Reform start taking over councils, and not in a good way. On top of that there's Local Government Reform in the offing, and it certainly won't help to have hundreds of newly-minted councillors trying to steer through those uncharted waters. | |

The difference will be twofold: How much council tax you pay; What level of services you get. The results will be extrapolated as a popularity contest for the national parties because they put up the candidates but local politics is a completely different beast. If you want the low council tax Restore, Reform (or to a lesser degree Conservative) are for you. But expect the lowest levels of local services. If you want good local services council tax won't be driven quite as low. Green are the ideal ones for that around here. LibDems and probably Labour would lean this way too. I would just ask is it worth saving about £100-200 per year to put up with poor quality local services driven to their cheapest possible?

My hope is that, if Reform do pick up hundreds of seats tomorrow, and take control of numerous councils, they'll spend the next two years showing just how incompetent they are, and be the biggest advert against a Reform government in 2029.

It can be far more nuanced than that and I think it's worth spending time looking in great detail at what the local element of your party stands for, as it might not be the same as you think - there are sometimes huge differences between local branches of the same party. I lived in one inner London borough with a local Labour party who were happy with outsourcing, shutting down social care services and prevaricating about traffic measures. Generally useless and deservedly voted out in 2022. I worked in a neighbouring Labour borough who had brought the majority of services back in house and went big on LTNs. The opposite of their neighbours and deservedly returned with a massive majority in 2022, with their main competition coming from the Greens. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The only people that will deliver a Reform Government are the racists and xenophobes that’ll vote them in.

Nope. That's what the sensible moderates will tell themselves to help themselves feel better about what they have done.

At this point, I really don't think explanations are required. I don't think the sensible moderates will ever own it anyway so it seems a little pointless.

They also appear to be the biggest challenge for Reform here. Usually Lib Dems get my local vote as my candidate is very good

So you can't explain it? Sensible moderates are to blame for extremists getting voted in? What do you think the answer is then?

Yep. The sensibles are going to be directly responsible. They don't want to accept it though. It's a bit too late for a an answer. Any version of it was and instantly crushed by the sensibles who were worried that their cushty water/energy/AI/financial services job on the board would be kyboshed if they didn't. Thought you lot liked calling a spade a spade? Vote for who you want, that’s democracy. Reform are the party for racists, xenophobia, Putin appeasers and traitors. Not sure why you’re so upset about that - but as I said, vote for who you want.

Whilst no fan of Reform, I would be very wary of smearing all their voters like that. Doing so will just repeat the Brexit mistakes. But then again the sensibles seem bent on doing exactly that.

The problem there is that Reform are a party of low tax yet every council they run has had some of the highest raises in the country so you can't even rely on them for that. And they have also wasted vast amounts on stupid things like parking spaces for themselves, flags and, ironically, a team to find where to save money (which they haven't succeeded in doing because councils have been stretched for the last 15 years). Reform have also had a massive turnover of councillors because they tend to be people without any experience and realise it's a really tough job.

They are already doing that in the councils they run yet popularity seems to be holding. I despair of people sometimes. They say things like "the town centre is all closed down, I'm voting Reform". I don't recall hearing a single policy from Reform about town centre rejuvenation so why is that the answer? I despair.

Because why wouldn't you roll the dice when you've been left behind? Of course it isn't the answer, but what other answers are there? We need the sort of radical change the Greens offer but we'll have to go through Reform first. This is at the feet of the centrists who couldn't deal with losing their influence and have behaved appallingly since.

It feels as if, politically, we're at the Biden stage of what America has been going through. We've voted out the corrupt, incompetent right-wing government, but the new chap is struggling to gain traction, so the right-wing are getting ever more emboldened and look as if they'll re-take power in 2029.

In my local borough, the reform candidate is a paper candidate, no one even knows what she looks like. Yet she is still expected to get at least 30% of the vote.
