Reading this, I think I've sussed out why 1982 was so brilliant a World Cup for many of us....

Nostalgia at its best. Enjoy.

Going back to the early 80s and even into 1990 - there was not the level of live football on TV, and certainly not the level of non British football coverage.

A handful of European matches over the season may get covered but as soon as British sides went out of the competition, you usually only had the final on TV.

All of the players we used to see in 78, 82, 86 and even a number in 1990 were mythical creatures who you had read about but rarely saw, and live football was a treat - so getting 2-3 games PER DAY for a month was simply magical.

These days with the globalisation of the game, most of the names are regular visitors to our front rooms either through domestic leagues or the different Euro competitions. Add to that the fact that there are tens of live matches every weekend and through the week on TV and the Internet, it is just saturated viewing.

Finally, and specific to this article, shame on anyone who references the '82 world cup without mentioning the Tardelli goal (and celebration) in the final . . .

I was too busy getting pissed up and watching the football to take my University exams seriously - hence failed them
