Fiorentina were in Serie B the season before we were in for him, while we were heading into our third season in the English top flight, a league that was gaining a lot of traction (and money) so he wasn't as unrealistic as many might think now.

Gascoigne had a schoolboy trial at Town, at which he failed to impress. Many other top players were rejected as schoolboys. Kevin Beattie turned up at Liverpool Station, but no-one from the club met him, so he returned to Carlisle. all pointless speculation.
Gascoigne would have preferred to remain in his native north-east anyway & if he had made the grade at Town, he's have quickly been snapped up by a bigger club. |  |

Big ITV Anglia feature when he signed too. Weirdly the sister botherers still hold him in high regard despite joining us for a day.
