I know a few refs who cover various levels. They still have whatsapp groups where they go on in the morning of a match day and all vote on a shirt number that has to be booked in the game they are covering. |  |

It opens up a huge new potential for refs to be abused at all levels! Mostly unjustified I’m sure but there will definitely be more scrutiny for a while. | | | |

No different from some players WA groups I have seen, where they identify an oppo number that they each repeatedly foul! |  |

About 20 odd years ago I knew a ref who was at Conference North/South level. He loved the abuse he got and admitted that he made decisions that he knew would ramp it up. Typically there would be between 200 & 600 in attendance.
We went out in Leicester one night [not for the faint hearted] and he was terrified all evening that we'd end up in a fight. It turned out that behaving like that whilst refereeing gave him, in his mind, a level of protection from a baying crowd that doesn't exist if you mouth off and behave like an arse in a public place.

Except that the Ref is in a position of authority over the match, with little or no challenge to his decisions. Player shenanigans run the risk of being penalised. Silly games by Refs do not and can arbitrarily affect the outcome. |  |
