You do need a good few frosts to kills the parasites and bugs.
Can't wait to get my new patch running.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Not veg, but Winter Aconites and Snowdrops are bursting into flower at Sentence Manor. Daffs just starting to emerge and Anemones have been pushing through since before Christmas.

Some good shows of hardy Cyclamen too alongside the Aconites Mr Sentence.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

No frosts down this way yet this year (not that we normally get many anyway). And the grass is still going strong - needs curtting again and I only did it a few weeks ago. First time I can remember having to cut teh lawn over Dec/Jan. Rest of then garden looks like it does in MArch normally. All a bit nuts this year.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Indeed. However, two years ago, I was sitting on Felixstowe sea front having an ice cream, a month later, we had the beast from the east. I,m sure Mother Nature will bite us on the arse at some point.

I’ve applied for a council allotment.

I hope to get it and start growing my own food.

This is actually my fav time of year - with snowdrops starting to peep through & daylight gradually extending again, you get a sweet taste of the natural world stirring again & the delicious slow build towards spring.

Had a couple of periods of quite deep frosts here so far - about 3 nights each, first was in Nov iirc.

get a duck

Those will trash your veg, eating the flowers as they start to show any gains I'd have thought.

Plus if I had a duck I'd be tempted to eat it.

Hedgehogs! They be the answer if it can be done.

Hmm, yeah the eating thing would be a problem, sorry vegans but Duck is really delicious, a great way for turning slugs into something really tasty.

Hedgehogs might be the way forward, what are they like to eat?

That's a result this time of year.

When did you plant the broccoli?

Is it usually fairly hardy anyway, like a winter variety or something?

Mention Wales and I automatically think of hills, cold weather with snow and/or rain, and funny accents.

It's comparatively tropical down your part I guess.

Late Summer/early Autumn (as small plants not seed)....they normally establish themselves, then go dormant for the Winter and then produce the goods in early March...defo one to grow...hoping for my first asparagus harvest this Spring too.

And growing over those months as opposed to the height of bug season must mean fewer enemies too.

I've watched in dismay in the past as entire crops of green stuff has disappeared before my eyes due to those black flea beetle things.

I shall definitely bear those in mind, thanks.

You will still need to net against butterflies and/or squish the eggs while the plants get established.
