"Nobody knows what the strategy from the government is". You cant really argue with it can you. Forget political leanings. We are told we need masks in shops from next friday....why not now. Go to work from Boris, dont go to work from Sage. I need a mask to buy a loaf of bread but don't need one to sit in a restaurant or pub for ages. Now they want the death from covid figures altered. I actually agree the figures are inflated but feel they want the numbers changed to hide their incompetence. The whole strategy is a shambles.

I know what the strategy is. Back to normal, with such concessions as are palatable and easy. Then hope for the best.

It’s crazy - in my NHS trust all annual leave is stopped in October in anticipation of the second wave wave, yet today we have had return to football crowds in October and all back to normal by December

The figures aren’t inflated, are they? There may be some accuracy issues with how they are counted, but the official toll is barely two thirds of the excess deaths toll, which is seen as a more accurate if less precise estimate.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

It's pretty clear why. One is preparation for the worst case scenario. One is hope based on the current trend that things will keep improving and we won't have a second wave.

Most people have home insurance but that doesn't stop them planning to redecorate.

I dont understand comparing wearing of masks in a shop with a restaurant, you cannot eat if you have a mask on.

Also if you were forced to wear a mask in shops immediately and you don't have a mask you aren't going to be able to go into a shop and buy masks. Surely by giving a date in a weeks time it gives those people who don't currently have masks the chance to go and buy some masks first. If you have a mask now you can wear it.

I thought I would wear mask today in preparation for them being compulsory. In a store over 40 people I was only one wearing a mask. Be interested to see what happens come Friday.

If anybody doesn't have face masks they could just order some online or get family members of friends to order for them. They dont have to physically walk in to a shop to buy some.

Yes but that doesn't let him have a jolly good whine about it.

I haven't been in a pub or restaurant so there are gaps in my understanding of the protocol.

Do patrons have to don a mask when they leave their tables and go to the loos or order drinks etc?

That's how it's supposed to work here, so I would assume so.

Nobody is expecting you to eat and drink through a mask...

Maybe there's a niche for masks with a pluggable hole suitable for straws.

If someone had thought this through they would run a cafe/restaurant that only sells soup and alcohol. And sells these specialist masks.

I'm on it. This time next year Rodney...

No wearing of masks in pubs etc at all. Just shops.

And make sure employers and individuals can be blamed rather than the government. It's cowardly and sickening.

The problem the government has is that all along they have made 'the science' the centrepiece of their strategy. Yet, there is no scientific consensus and it is far too early to know much at all about what is a very complex situation. They don't know how many cases of covid there has been, this year or last year. They don't know how many people have died because of covid. They don't even how infectious it is, or even how it is transmitted. But they have had to be seen to be DOING SOMETHING. This is the problem. If you don't have any reliable data, then you have to make something up. You bring in scientists who agree with you and want to implement your policy. Scientists who aren't too outspoken. There's a saying that you cannot reason yourself out of a situation that you haven't reasoned yourself into in the first place. This is now the government's problem. Nothing that they say now stands up to any scrutiny or science at all. The evidence for facemasks is very weak. There's just as much evidence that they help spread disease and cause other issues. But the government now cannot roll back and say that they made a mistake. Things got exaggerated. They need a visual prop, such as a facemask, to get them out of this mess. Sadly it means continual impinging on people's rights and freedoms which I suspect are not all going to be given back if they ever get themselves out of this shambles. Once people find out the truth about the deaths they have caused in care homes and realise the real destruction of the economy by the lockdown, I don't think they will last very long.

the evidence for masks isnt weak- and I am not aware of any obvious problems with them. Unless i have missed something?

I agree there is an element of props, and tokenism though
