Just as interesting as i remember when it was first aired getting on for 30 years ago.
Now there is someone i could spend time with over a beer or three. Would imagine he has some ripping yarns to tell.
Who else would fellow TWTD ers like to chew the cud with ?

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Would probably say something inappropriate to Kylie, or stammer a load of old gibberish twaddle. Good shout though.

Watched the first 3/4hr of it - as you say, fantastic stuff. And he & Sir David Attenborough were both spot on about how such travel opens up/changes your whole mindset about different ways of living.

I've been watching 'Pole to Pole' on BBC4 the last few weeks, I thought I'd watched it first time around in '92, but none of it seemed familiar. Fantastic series, he really makes it so watchable.

It was a great watch but found it a bit sad at the same time, the Ukranian dreaming of independence, the situation in Sudan and the comments about apartheid ending but the day to day hadn't really changed. This was 30 years ago, times were changing but it all seems depressingly much worse now.

On a similar travelling vein I'd like to go an a train journey with Portillo, I remember staying up when he got voted out on Election Night 97 and rejoicing but I love the bloke now.

Agreed, I went to Haverhill last year. I was incredibly grateful to return to the 21st century when we left.

Truly impaired.

Watching this at the time only fuelled the flames for my travel bug. I've since been lucky enough to travel to over 40 countries and counting. I'd love to sit down for a beer with Michael Palin along with Sir David Attenborough, Ray Mears, and the late Jaques Cousteau amongst others.
