Apart from the decent wage and time you get 15:01 - Feb 18 with 768 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

Surely the chance to be the hero who resurrected ITFC would be a pull to a lot of self respecting football managers? They'll be of an age where they remember the great side under Sir Bobby, the fairytale and romance that that was, and when you think about the size of the sleeping fanbase across Europe, that's got to be a mouthwatering prospect.

I see a lot of people saying 'such and such' wouldn't come here but I think this job is still attractive to people of a certain age who know their footballing history. It's the chance to follow in the footsteps of one of the greatest and most revered men in the history of the game.

I might be biased but I think those with a romantic bent would be interested in the possibilities despite where we currently sit.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I hate to use the term sleeping giant, any we're not really a giant, but we should be far higher than where we are. Someone looking at us will think it's a great opportunity to enhance their credentials and really push their career on without mad (albeit abject) owners breathing down their necks.

There really is a quick win to be had for someone, obviously structurally, changes are needed but more importantly wins are far more of a concern now and with our squad it should be an easy turnaround.

The alternative view is that you would have to be pretty desperate for work to come to a club with so many problems, with the heart ripped out of it, a disconnected fan base, an owner who doesn't care, a club so notorious for not providing any transfer money, one with bad PR, an apparently poor structure (whatever that means), a remote chance of it being sold, then you end up out of work, the pressure of expectations, one that loses millions of pounds each year. The type of person attracted to that will be one out of work for a while and they will have been out of work for a while because they are not very good. I've posted this before, but the only way the next appointment will work is if ME is lucky. The only thing I cling to is that at some point, by the law of averages , he has to finally make a good appointment.

Nothing like being an optimist.....

My philosophy would be to prefer to take over something that's got so many things that could be improved - in what I call "my career", I did that numerous times, taking over situations where results were below expectation, mainly because it's relatively straightforward, if you are a competent manager, to improve 10 things marginally that contribute to a larger overall improvement. The trick for ITFC is to make sure, as a manager, that you would have the freedom to make changes to those things, and that might be the issue

For what its worth, Lambert identified a lot of the issues, and changed some of them (fan engagement, local community stuff etc) but ultimately, he wasn't capable of improving the only results that matter - on the field. So it's either PL's competence or he wasn't in control of the things that make a difference on the pitch. Given that he's had 5 transfer windows and he's been backed to bring in players, we have one of if not the highest wage budget in L1, he's been given a long contract and over 2 years with below par results, yet he still cant produce a winning side, its his competence, not the structure around him that's the problem

if I was a Football Manager, I'd grab the Town job with both hands, for the above reasons - I think this stuff about the club being rotten throughout is total bullsh1t

In the game Town are still a pull and the name has a certain romance as you state — that's absolutely undeniable. We are unfathomably still quite lucky in this regard, and fans don't always understand that. It will wear off though so we do need to pull ourselves together sharpish.

Absolutely right. There are so many factors that contribute to the appeal of a job, and some of them aren't moveable i.e. location. There's a finite amount of professional clubs in this country, so if you want to ply your trade in England there's only a relatively small number of clubs that are more attractive than ITFC. Certainly a damn site less clubs than managers. You've got an owner who, while crap, will give you time to get on with the job, which is more than can be said for many.

Of course the likes of Howe are silly suggestions, he'll got to a Newcastle or Celtic, but I don't know why people think Nigel Pearson wouldn't take the job. We've still got some pull, and rightly so given the potential.

We've not been a pull based on our name for well over 10 years now for players or managers, which is why we always attract the worse ones. Nobody would take less money to work or play here than go to another club. What happened 40 years ago is beyond most peoples memory. Ask any average football fan about Ipswich and then mostly assume we have been at this level for years anyway. It's sad to accept that but we are a little club now.

Hard to argue with the sentiment, but I disagree the club's heart has been ripped out. It is still there, and it is still beating. And it can be massaged back to rude health if Evans sorts it out/gets lucky/fooks off.

We're not dead yet.

i did say in my OP, self respecting managers of a certain age. So not "any average football fan."

Ok, scrap my post from earlier — I don't know what I'm on about, hands up.

Absolute nonsense. A lot of that is meaningless soundbites (heart ripped out of it), stuff that wouldn't bother a manager (one that loses millions of pounds each year), ludicrous speculation based on nothing (might be sold, then you're out of work), the list goes on...

Of course not. It only needs someone half competent to come in and string a few wins together for the optimism to come flooding back.

There must be something very attractive about taking charge at a club that's not done anything for a while either, in terms of expectation. The upside potential is huge at Ipswich for a manager who wants to roll their sleeves up a la Mick and get us going again. Relative to the sides in this division we should be right up in the mix in the top 6 as a bare minimum, so the chance of promotion is decent, and establishing the club back in the Championship at least. I would much rather that, than have to replace a fan favourite following a period of success, where the only way really is south.

It's like getting with a woman, you want the hot one that's just wasted a few years with some absolute chump. Perhaps I just have a deep inferiority complex.
