Probably "let me get you promoted and then sell up for a bigger fee". Knew the writing was on the wall for him the moment the takeover got serious.

I think Evans was holding out for takeover first, then let Lambert go, Lambert obviously if he was going anyway not keen to wait and wanted the new guy in.

That could be the disagreement on immediate priorities.

Perhaps Evans had to seek approval from the US before letting PL go. Would explain Gill’s increased presence on the touch line

I think the Randy Lerner jibe implied that, along with the ‘needs help’ stuff. Once he started briefing against the boss his time was up. He’ll be OK though, the payoff will be handsome and he leaves on a bounce so some mug will sign him up.
