Apparently the ref had a shocker, also awarding us our goal, despite it being an indirect free kick and nobody else touching the ball.

That's not as bad as Stuart Atwell awarding a goal to Reading at Watford in 2008, I still can't believe that both him and the lino thought it went in.

I was there and no one could quite believe he gave their goal, not even the Chelsea fans. I don’t remember anything else about the game other than me and my trying to avoid getting the #@#& kicked out of us

Roy Capey, I've never forgotten the name. We were standing in the open end behind that goal, waiting for the goal kick to be taken, when we suddenly realised what was happening. Just could not believe it. I remember mouthing off about it for so long until threats from a nearby Chelsea fan shut me up. Got talking to a journalist on the way to the tube after the game and he refused to believe that the ball had gone past the post. Would have loved to have seen his reaction when he saw the TV footage.

Yep I was behind that goal.

Geoff Hammond debut for us that day.

David Best placed the ball for our goalkick.

Unbelievable Jeff.

Think England had a yellow kit in the 70s as well. Must have been a fashion thing.

I missed that one, I couldn’t get time off to go and we wouldn’t have made it for the game. One of the only major games I missed in the era,

I was there and couldn't believe he had given it. Hudson in his autobiography said he knew it had missed but when he saw the ref reaction he held up his hands to celebrate and shouted at the other Chelsea players to pretend he had scored to fool the ref into thinking he had given the correct decision

I didn't live far from Stamford Bridge in those days so what I do remember was avoiding getting a kicking after the game as normal with Chelsea fans. A few months earlier I had gone to a Chelsea v Spurs game with a neighbour who was a Chelsea fan I'll always remember it after the game a group of 6 people ( 3 men & 3 women) walked past us with Spurs scarfs on and these were middle aged people into an housing estate suddenly lots of screaming and shouting including women screaming. A few people including me ran to see what was happening and the 6 had been set upon by a load of Chelsea's fans, I've never seen women get a beating like that before thumped to the ground and one guy kicking one of the women in the face as she was on the ground, all because they were Spurs fans. Those were the days when I realised football hooliganism in England was out of control

My brother was at that match. Said it was bizarre, there was no hint of it being a goal, no appeals etc, until the officials conspired to give it.

I was there, and I have still got the No. 5 yellow shirt. A few years later the Club donated a set to the London Branch footie team.

That was my first away match, didn't go to another one until the 1975 FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park. My third was our one goal win at Carrot Road (following year I think) and one of the the most exuberant goal celebrations I can remember in a crowd.

Standard away kit for lots of teams at that time.

I think our blue away shorts were a darker hue than our Royal Blue home shirts, and our yellow away tops were, of course, of a more sober and commanding shade than the ridiculously flamboyant and preening yeller of a minor local team from East Anglia.

We won 1-0 in Norfolk on 9th April 1977-Trevor Whymark scored so that would be the game you mean.

Also 1-0 in 1978/79 with Frans Thijssen scoring.

Ah, thanks, PJH. Being lazy this morning and not Googling the details. It was the 1977 game.

Apart from being asked what my spectacles case was by a policewoman on the search going into that decrepit excuse for a stadium (I then had to open the case to show that it did indeed contain a pair of glasses) and being led away by police escort after the game to the rail station (where we had to climb a wall and then descend a steep grassy slope under police orders) one other memory I have is of supporters being able to reach up and take bits off the low roof above the stand home for a souvenir (Man Utd. supporters had done most of the damage to the roof at the previous Nodge home game but, of course, 'Look Norwich' piled all the blame on the supporters of East Anglia's Cup, League and European trophy winning team.)

I had an amusing exchange recently with Mr Capey's daughter.

That's brilliant! I was told that Mr Capey was in charge at Colchester on the following Friday evening and loads of Ipswich fans turned up and sarcastically celebrated goals every time a shot flew past a post.
