People on FB losing their minds because "Raheem Sterling got an MBE for scoring the winning goal."
At first I thought it was someone using satire to wind up the gammon, but no, it was real and the replies proved that the story was widely believed. Thankfully the post was removed but the increase in racist rhetoric really is worrying.
I saw there was a group outside the ground called "Patriotic Alternative" who were outside the ground persuading fans not to kneel before the game. Some of the group's supporters on twitter got upset about the goal, claiming Sterling isn't English because he was born in Jamaica.

Patriots, my arse.
Why haven't they got a problem with our foreigner PM. Don't they know Boris wasn't born in the UK. Is it 'cos he's white?
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Oh dear. What a plank.
Herbivore is right though. Not everybody who voted for Brexit is a racist, but those who are racist and voted for Brexit have undoubtedly been emboldened by a perceived idea that they are in the majority.
"Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."
There are plenty of pieces of anecdotal evidence that suggest a rise of racism as well. Be that videos of ethnic minorities being intimidated on public transport under the pretence of 'Brexit is coming' or the inevitable abuse of BAME footballers following a less than perfect performance.
There are plenty of other pieces of formal evidence that I'm sure other members of the board would be willing to point you in the direction of too.

My gut feeling is you won't get a detailed rebuttal here.

Agreed. Something about the way the post was written made me re-read it again, but it's in all likelyhood correct

thank you. your 3rd link down is an excellent read. strongly recommend it (although, even for a scholarly article, the author could really do with a plain english editor).
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

All valid, although we're missing a trick by focussing on Brexit as the prime link imo. Brexit was just a means to an end to enable the current populist nationalist government, who are stoking racial and xenophobic tensions in order to win votes. They and their client journalists and political commentators are what's actually driving it all. Brexit was just a sideshow.
