Shocking story in the times about gun deaths in the US 13:07 - Jul 6 with 1162 viewsnodge_blue

400 shooting incidences over the independence weekend.

150 killed over the weekend.

40,000 a year die of gun injuries in the US.

Even allowing for a high percentage of those being suicides, the amount of gun deaths would surely shock most countries into banning guns!

Pah, that's nothing. We've just had ~130,000 deaths in just over a year and some people don't want to do anything about it

(You're quite right - it's nuts over there. Almost impossible to change though with all the vested interests and constitutional rights, etc.).

Back to last nights thread hey!

Ive fully supported all the lockdowns and measures to date. I will personally still avoid alot of indoor crowded pubs etc out of personal reservations and caution.

And I saw Chris Whitty cautiously backed the ending of restrictions as well. He's said all along we will have to learn to live with it.

Anyhow I don't want to resurrect that debate! Its a sobering thing to have to face.

American gun deaths though are crazy. Thats a football stadium of people being killed by guns every year.

There's that stat isn't there, that more Americans have been killed in domestic shootings since the mid 1960s than in all combat ever. That includes the civil war.

It's insane the influence the NRA has over there.

Absolutely.

Biden apparently wants to carry out background checks. presumably for people to own guns. But the numbers suggest that isn't enough. Its probably "do you vote for trump" - YES = no gun.

"do you vote for trump" - YES = no gun.

Actually that might not be a bad way for vetting potential responsible gun ownership.

I think the suicides is an urban myth. Its been a while since i lived in the USA - but the most startling contribution to death and injury was 'accidents'. I doubt much has changed. To my mind that number is quite low when you consider the amount of loons and extremists and the arsenal of lethal weapons they can buy on the high street.

I was only messing. It's nuts that the acceptance to gun deaths is so high over there. (Although in seriousness, Covid has given us in insight into how that can be the case. Individual tragedies can quickly become just numbers and normalised. The issue becomes politicised, etc.).

Anyhow, I never cease to be amazed that over there you can walk into a supermarket and buy gun starter sets aimed at young kids. How screwed up is that?

Available on all good streaming services no doubt. Its off the album called Illinois.Compulsory listening Id have thought for all residents. Tracks 3,4 and 10 worth a listen. If you don't like them then you won't like the rest. (Some of that album is a bit rubbish - sprinkled with some genius songs)

I had a big spell of listening to him. He does this american folk sound I guess. Very good song writer but not everyones taste Im sure.

On a sort of flip side to this, not long ago I was talking to a group of Americans and they were shocked at how many shops over here sold alcohol. Think they said that their off-licences weren’t allowed to sell wine.

Definitely a cultural thing but it is crazy that no matter how high gun deaths add up it’ll always be a case of personal liberty on whether or not they are allowed firearms.

One one level, it’s a good case for not having some sort of unwieldy constitution that isn’t fit for the modern age.

The Americans had prohibition of course. Ok to have a gun but not a glass of beer in the 1920s.

Think the prohibition movement (or the British equivalent) was quite influential here. A number of factory owners were Methodists and build worker accommodation on the strict condition of no alcohol.

I could well be wrong on this.

I found it a bit harder to get beers over there, but largely because less shops in the rural area we were in. Although all the stores carried beer and wine, although wine was much less popular. Our tiny local store had a walk in beer chiller than was about a quarter of the size of the store. It probably varies by state, but you'd have no problem fueling a habit in Maine. People did tend to drink less though and you saw less drunkenness at events.

But I did have trouble getting served at events like the hockey and baseball. If you're not local you needed photo ID, which was a bit bizarre as it wasn't for age reasons.

You could certainly buy beer and guns in the same stores, which probably makes for an interesting combination!

Ask some of those good ol' boys and they'll still tell that the only way you will end gun violence is with guns.

It is part of the disturbing culture of that society.

One that strongly opposes universal healthcare, on the basis that it will give a 'something for nothing' benefit for those who do not deserve it. And will come at the detriment of the little they now get.

Odd that this bizarre 'pet care plan' arrangement is not deemed suitable for the US armed forces - there it is a case of the sanity of health care at the point of need.

You do not see this bizarre arrangement anywhere else either ie police, fire service, schools etc. And I wonder what the annual death toll is from lack of healthcare compared to gun deaths.

Years of almost North Korea style indoctrination have delivered up an insular population, ignorant of how backward looking it is in so many ways.
