and had some mildly interesting takeaways from him:

- He's mates with Frank Nouble and JET. He said when JET was breaking through at Arsenal he played defence but wasn't very physical at the time, had unreal skills. Wenger told him if he beefed up he could be a great ball playing centre back and break through further. JET insisted that he saw himself as an attacking player and his career then took a different path - he's always struggled with end product.

- Darren Powell is the worst manager he has ever played for. Ruined his career. He was man of the match one week then didn't make the bench the following week. Powell would avoid him in corridors and hide away from honest conversations - just blanked players. He can't believe he's in the England set up now.

- Players know when they're going to get relegated around February time. They know if they're going to survive. Players and managers will always spin out the same media training to suggest they can survive but there's always a feeling in the camp that it's game over - categorically every time. You also know as a player if your team is going to escape relegation.

- Some players try to get one game bans from yellow cards to avoid horrible trips. I was speaking to this player about a former teammate of his I once went for drinks with. This former teammate was one yellow away from a one game ban and Carlisle (A) was the next game but one. He told me he was going to try and get a yellow to avoid travelling to Carlisle which I couldn't believe at the time. I think he played Morecambe (H) a few days later and I checked - sure enough he'd pulled a player back with 2 mins to go and received a yellow. Got to avoid Carlisle.

I asked his teammate last week about that and he said 'Oh yes, I remember that well - we all know what he was doing. The gaffer knew what he was doing. He got in a lot of trouble for that - but still didn't have to go to Carlisle'.

I’m glad someone is paying attention. Didn’t seem right when I typed it

I wonder if that includes players "knowing" they won't get promoted in February, too. Might explain the lacklustre end to last season.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Ha yes. Played mostly around League One but think he was in this Championship with Charlton.

If he’s also guilty of ‘missing’ matches and having a similar attitude than no wonder he played predominantly L1.

He never did that, he couldn’t believe his teammate did it. He was actually a very good professional and doesn’t hold any bitterness. He just found that Powell was so dismissive and didnt communicate in the slightest. He wasn’t surprised to see him flop at Huddersfield.

I'm gonna guess the yellow card thing is a lot more common than people think.

Also do players really "know" they're gonna get relegated or not? That sounds a bit weird to me.

The deliberate yellow card - a la Beckham and others - has been going on since they were first introduced. In lower league circles, it's often to make sure to attend a wedding etc.

I can't remember who, but there is a PL player who has missed the Xmas away fixture something like 6 years out of 7, may have been Kevin Nolan

Yeah, Nolan used to pickup a habitual suspension that time of year. Lee Bowyer is another who used to regularly happen to get suspended for Boxing Day games, and I think since retiring hasn’t tried too hard to hide that fact!
