Some Newport Thoughts 08:07 - Aug 11 with 4047 views | jayessess | Just watched the full match replay on iFollow (is that new? Good feature, especially as you can tell the app to "hide scores", avoid the result and watch as live) Obviously given the standard of the opposition you can't make too many firm judgements, but... - We won't lose many games in which we're that dominant, so more or less discard the result entirely. That said, we need to urgently get out of this bad habit of conceding to the first shot we face all the bloody time. - The midfield two. El Mizouni looked a really steady CM, barely gave the ball away first half, used it generally quite well, if a little conservatively. I wonder if he can muscle ahead of Nolan in the pecking order. Humphreys grew into the game and you can see his eye for a pass is a bit special. Took a while to find his range, but some great spots second half. Gonna be useful to have an under-21 player as a 5th option in there. - Some talk of Dobra going out on loan, but absolutely no justification for him sitting behind Barry and Aluko in the pecking order on the basis of tonight. He still makes some questionable decisions and it's a real shame he went another game without a goal or assist when he really shouldn't have, but he's doing good attacking things that we aren't seeing from anyone else at the club. Barry had a couple of nice moments, but snatched at things at times. Aluko... needs fitness. - Not news, but Fraser immediately looked a cut above when he came on, lovely player we've got there. - centre backs, thought this of him at Colchester too, but Ndaba just has very little presence in the box. Decent on the ball and one-on-one, but a marginal presence when the ball comes in from wide. Woolfie looks more assertive tonight though. - Bonne's a better target man than previous reviews implied - Bailey Clements looked a good, composed player. Hopefully, he's earned himself a decent loan. [Post edited 11 Aug 2021 8:15]

Superb. Cheers. Had no idea although wondering if it will work on the desktop main site. Probably not I guess but I'll check later.
Some Newport Thoughts on 08:46 - Aug 11 with 3779 views | itfcjoe | Barry obviously has talent, and Aluko has very good pedigree but you can tell it is going to be frustrating to see how much more Dobra has to do to get games ahead of them as just is showing enough to start. Everything good last night came through him in an attacking sense, he was the one who broke the lines, bar some lovely weighted passes from Humphreys. Thought Bonne did well too - Barry was quiet, whereas Aluko was a genuine negative in that for the first 40 minutes everything he did helped them rather than us! I think Clements showed he knew how to play the role expected of him, but didn't have the right quality at times, and Donacien showed he didn't! Ndaba struggled up against the big lump and looks a little way of it. Woolfie bounced back well and looked more comfortable on the right carrying the ball than he did on Saturday. Just a shame to concede such an early goal, and then not be able to equalise because it set the game up in a pattern which resulted in a lot of blocked shots etc.

Spot on Joe - agree with all of this. Good job we have four (if you include Burns) higher-quality full backs in the squad and I was expecting Aluko to get sent off at one point. Having said this the shots on target were there and Dobra was denied by a great save. It's possible none of these will start Saturday no won't be reading too much into it.

I can see why Ndaba got shunted around at Ayr. There's plenty of ability there but not quite enough physicality for a centre back at the moment. Barry had a handful of really nice moments, pity he snatched at one of our better chances. Weighing their relative involvement though I can't see how anyone with eyes would play him instead of Dobra. Aluko had one positive bit of play just before half time that suggested something might just have clicked, but he's clearly a long way off it right now. Again, bringing him in so you can (potentially) send Dobra out would be absolute madness!

Some Newport Thoughts on 10:04 - Aug 11 with 3427 views | IPS_wich | Yup - I just watched the extended (12 minutes) highlights and to quote the commentator (not Radio Suffolk) towards the end of the game 'I have absolutely no idea how Ipswich are losing this game'. It was literally the goal for Newport and then about 15/16 chances for us. Even on the highlights Dobra looked like he is a goal away from exploding. We will clearly play worse than this and win games this season.

On this: "we need to urgently get out of this bad habit of conceding to the first shot we face all the bloody time." As much as anything else, this cost us a lot last season. We didn't concede many chances but did concede an awful lot of them. Confidence really suffered as a result.

We were generally very vulnerable on the break. I felt more concerned if Town had a corner than if the opposition did. Presumably Cook will have been working on this, but we will be vulnerable until a first choice back 5 is bedded in.

The way we're setting up I think there's always going to be spaces in behind our full backs and opportunities for strikers to get at our centre backs one-on-one. Against Morecambe it was less shape and more a series of individual errors that created our problems.

If Nbada is a little way off and Toto is injured we need two experienced CBs in asap. If not we are going to be leaking goals such as this till way into the Autumn.
Some Newport Thoughts on 10:35 - Aug 11 with 3237 views | Wallingford_Boy | Was the game THAT one sided? Stats don't seem to back up what I've read on how we should have won easily. 6-3 to us with shots on target. 7-4 to us on corners. Hardly a landslide!

Some Newport Thoughts on 10:36 - Aug 11 with 3228 views | TomTheWriter | Very good summary of the game. Have to say this though, because it feels like I’m projecting a vastly different view about Dobra than everyone else. It’s not a case of Dobra going out on loan because he is ‘behind Barry and Aluko’ in the pecking order. He isn’t, he’s probably above both. BUT, Dobra doesn’t displace Chaplin nor Fraser at this very moment. The latter two barely know each other and they combined expertly for the goal on Saturday. I don’t want Armando Dobra to be treated this season as an ‘impact sub’ because he is too good for that. Leave that to Barry, Bonne, Edwards etc. Dobra is a special talent that is just behind our attacking trio, but is too good to be wasted on the bench for 20-25 minute cameos each game. I want him out on loan to a top-end L2 side, playing 90 minutes week in, week out and dominating the league like Scott Twine did at Newport, because he will come back an even better player, and will be better for it having not sat on the bench every game waiting to come in. He needs consistent starts, and he won’t get that over Chaplin and Fraser.

Dobra has refused loans in the past & preferred to fight for his place. I doubt he'd want to drop down a league, especially as Brighton wanted to sign him a year or so ago. However, he needs game time to develop & hard to see him starting many league games.

I love the attitude that he has, always wants to work to be the best in the room. He is on his way, evidenced by last night, but he needs to take what he did last night into consideration. He dominated going forward. You can say it was a rotated Newport team, but 5 of the players involved started the play-off final loss. Last night was a breeze for him, and it will be like that for him if he dropped down a level. He might not want to, but it would be better for his own career getting 40+ games in League Two compared to getting 15+ in League One. Team like Newport would love him in their 3-5-2 formation, playing just behind the front two. He should do what Twine did, six-month loan deal into League Two, ripped it apart, returned to League One and dominated for Swindon.

Equally, like Man City with Foden, we could keep him here, give him enough game time to keep his development going (but also not flogging him to death when he's still young), whilst also monitoring his training and development. If we are sending him out, I also don't see why it should be to L2. He'd improve plenty of L1 sides.

It's a very tough choice for both Cook and Dobra to make. We know he is good enough for this Ipswich side, but with him probably being the best player out of the academy in the first team squad, we need to figure out his best path. Ashton has always said it is about finding the right pathway for youngsters to get into the first team. Right now, attack looks to be the hardest path for a youngster. If you're a CB, RB, or CM, different question. I went with League Two because I'd rather he's too good for a team fighting for promotion than go to a team fighting for relegation. Playing well blossoms confidence, no better way to do that than by being on the attack in L2 rather than being at a L1 team looking to scrape a draw. If I had the choice between Newport and Fleetwood, I'd probably choose Newport because you'll be getting on the ball more in attacking areas.

Would probably be far more ideal to loan somewhere like Cambridge, Cheltenham or Wimbledon where he could play in this league regularly and would be unavailable against us whilst hopefully hurting our rivals.
