Some interesting parallels between Scotland and Ipswich 11:19 - Nov 13 with 785 viewsDarth_Koont

As a fan of Ipswich and Scotland, the past couple of decades have been ... pretty relentlessly fecking awful! 😀

We’ve both had some good results and flurries but those always felt like we were punching above our weight. As demonstrated by just as easily losing to poorer opposition the next time.

Now there are indications that the teams are getting results and performances because of the team and its set up not in spite of it. Scotland are admittedly a bit further down that road than Ipswich but hopefully the comparisons can give us hope.

They’re a side that plays to a system rather than chopping and changing for the opposition or who is available. It’s an attacking, pressing formation that leaves us a bit vulnerable at times but based on what we’re doing with the ball and trying to win games. They’ve built a strong spine and with Gilmour now in there (perhaps like Morsy) they’ve got the missing piece of the jigsaw. And it’s a side built for the future with players who can be around for a good few years.

One difference is that they have a few different options during games to change the attacking formation. Perhaps that’s because they’ve been with Clarke for a year or more or they’re overall better players, but that’s something Cook and the team can look into when the team has fully settled. In our case, perhaps it would be the option of playing both Bonne and Pigott and adapting behind or putting Fraser in alongside Morsy to help us attack more through the middle.

Remains to be seen if Scotland can keep improving and step up to the next level of the play-offs. And beyond that to threaten more than in the Euros if we do qualify. Ditto Ipswich and promotion, and what would lie ahead.

But for the time being, I’m enjoying seeing two sides built on a system, who want to attack and who can keep building belief and getting better. It’s been a loooong time.

I was pleased for Scotland last night with their victory in Moldova. Just hope they get a favourable draw in the Play Offs and gain home advantage. Steve Clarke probably has the best Scottish squad in a long time at his disposal.

Yeah, there’s no doubt that they’ve now got a few players who would stand a chance of getting into a top international team’s side. Tierney, Robertson and eventually Gilmour. Plus Gordon, Marshall or McGinn perhaps as well given how good they’ve been.

But ultimately it’s been players who just play very well for Clarke and in his system.

We certainly haven’t had the same combination of youth and quality/potential in a long time and a lot of that’s Clarke’s bravery in not being afraid to use them. His belief in the squad seems to have been internalised by the players themselves.

Those highlights were good to watch last night, weren't they, Darth? And Patterson is coming along very well at the moment, Che Adams could have had a hat trick if only competent linesmen and VAR were not present. Craig Gordon rolled back the years with that penalty save too.

The World Cup that is just a step away now. However, there are some very strong teams in the runner-up places in those qualifying tables.

Ahhhh the ginger nectar ...

I prefer the caramel wafers. Simultaneously light and stodgy, I think they led directly to the theory of dark matter.

I have to confess to eating on 20-30 Teacakes a week! I Know it's shocking an they may well be the death of me but I just can't stop. I have a lot of very deep thoughts while stuffing my face with Teacakes so perhaps there is a link between light and stodgy Scottish treats and the possible solutions to mankind's biggest questions. Have a soft spot for a bit of Tizer as well.

Yeah, absolutely. I thought the whole game was pretty good too even if there were the occasional dips. But I think that’s part and parcel of being set up to attack and get players forward. Tierney’s LCB but he’s getting into the box and even the other CBs were pushing into the opposition half on occasion. Great to see!

Re: the Euros we qualified by the backdoor with the Nations League so getting through a play-off against a team like Sweden would be tougher. And I think we were a little too happy to be there in the tournament stage, and focused on not losing to England at Wembley. But a little disappointing after that. But if we manage to get to the WC then I can see this squad building on that as they seem to have even more self-belief now.

But excited rather than worried about the play-offs. Bring it on – as well as the game against Denmark on Monday with a roaring Hampden as a way to put down a marker.

That’s what losing to Scotland does! I hear Lithuania were pretty brutal against NI as well.

You’re absolutely right. But exactly the kind of game we’ve been struggling with in recent years.

In the end, we put in the away qualifier performance against a minnow that England see as normal. You have no idea how that feels for a Scotland fan – I even enjoyed the game!

Definitely looks a different Scotland. Some of the play yesterday was fantastic.

Truly impaired.

It's good to see the Scots on the verge of the World Cup. I hope we thrash them at the tournament of course, but it's good to see the UK nations doing well.

Agreed. I hope it’s a sign of Scotland building its confidence on the world stage and starting to emerge from the shadows. Rugby team is doing the same thing but a big test against the South Africans about to start.

It’s almost like there’s been a shift over the past few years ...

More evidence that Scotland and Wales can both thrive within the union under the right leadership
