A Charlton away public notice 08:22 - Nov 10 with 2034 viewsunbelievablue

The Antigallican pub is no more. It was sold in 2019 and is currently shrouded in scaffolding. My guess is that it's being turned into flats. So if anyone was intending to drink there...well, you can't.

Other local-ish options are chancing the Rose of Denmark (no colours) on the Woolwich road, or one of the pubs in Charlton village (up the hill), such as the Bugle Horn (again, probably no colours). The Angerstein on the border of Charlton and Greenwich (next to the A2) is a big boozer which also welcomes away fans.

I suppose most people drink at London Bridge and then go straight to the ground, but a friendly reminder that both Greenwich and Blackheath are a short train ride away and full of pubs.

Nice work.

FWIW, Royal Standard (on edge of Blackheath) is about half a mile from the ground, and was always half-decent back in the day.

As you say, Blackheath has many good pubs.

Ah yes - has been taken over and is quite nice now (decent burgers). It's the closest 'Blackheath' pub to the ground. Good thinking Fungeman.

Used to be my local for a short period at the turn of the century - well for Sunday football matches on sky at least. Looks very different now.

I normally feel a bit sad about the loss of pubs but that one was an absolute sh1thole.

Was indeed. Away fans pre-match, home fans post-match setup was weird.

The floor was sticky enough pre-match the one time I made the mistake of going in, hate to think what it was like afterwards.

It was OK because Noel Hunt wiped the floor with them.

Agreed. A hole and then some! The only value was as a meeting point. The general rule was meet there then trot off to the Denmark. Marginally better. After the game: London Bridge to the Barrow Boy or one of the ones in Borough Market for a celebratory session! Or Greenwich of course.

Part of its charm though. I necked a pint of red wine in there once for £20, shortly before the Noel Hunt smash and grab that put us top.

The sort of place where doing that at 11am goes entirely under the radar.

Walk up the Thames to the Anchor and Hope and then a cab to the match.

Will make an afternoon of it.

A big fan of the Anchor. Proper.
