This is a very good piece about sexual abuse of young Australian cricketers 13:33 - Jan 3 with 1751 views | Steve_M | It is deeply disturbing and the parallels to the blind eyes turned to the likes of Barry Bennell in the UK are stark. Sporting success clearly took precedence over moral integrity, Cricket Australia were clearly well aware of rumours and insinuations and did nothing. WARNING: Some of this is really grim. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-02/jamie-mitchell-cricket-abuse-on-india-and

Let's hope Jamie Mitchell finds some peace and that prosecutions follow. Thanks for posting.
This is a very good piece about sexual abuse of young Australian cricketers on 15:53 - Jan 3 with 1566 views | Illinoisblue | You have to wonder at what point in time did people realize that abusing kids is wrong? And that a cricket coach wearing Speedo’s in his hotel room with naked young boys is something that should be reported. In the 70s and 80s seems people just turned a blind eye. Was it in the 90s or early 00s when people found the courage to call out such vile abuse? I’m always sickened and intrigued by Gary Glitter on This is Your Life. The casual way his interaction with young girls is revealed and his awkward reaction to it. If similar happened now the 24/7 news cycle and social media whirlwind would end his career in minutes. Back then, not a peep.

A couple of things that came out of the #MeToo discussion were that a) it’s incredibly difficult to take that step forward as a victim or as a witness and b) the stories of what happened even when women told other women in authority/company directors/heads of HR. In the latter case, often the person coming forward is seen as causing the problem by talking about it and the reaction is about wanting them and the whole thing to go away. I don’t think any of these situations arise from people not knowing right from wrong, rather from an innate human fear of confrontation and going against the group. As we’ve seen, it often takes 1 or 2 to come forward, speak out and be believed before many other victims/witnesses have the confidence to step forward.

No doubt it’s difficult to blow the whistle if you’re a victim or a witness. I’m just intrigued as to what changed in society where people felt secure enough to come forward with accusations and when that shift occurred. We went from decades of institutional blindness and cover-ups to, thankfully, where we are now where people are listened to and believed.

I don’t think it’s changed all that much by the sound of it. But I think the information gets out there when people do come forward about abuse so certainly a little easier for others nowadays.

I thought one of the telling things in that piece was that Mitchell’s teammates had been supportive but also realised that speaking out could damage their career prospects. I do think there has been a change in public attitude though, it’s what allows victims to be listened to. The politician who tells Mitchell’s parents he had been raped, in itself better than looking away, didn’t do anything further and you would think that would be different now.

What on earth is that going to do to protect the public now?” any wonder victims are reluctant to come forward - even now

It’s a pretty horrific read and you are dead right - there are so many wrong uns out there. The young cricketer who is the victim in this article is damaged for life. Unforgivable. As a separate but connected issue, in addition to monsters like the perpetrator in this article, there are those in positions of authority who are aware but cover up or do nothing about it also stand condemned for me.

As with Boris Johnson and his reprehensible comments " “And one comment I would make is I think an awful lot of money and an awful lot of police time now goes into these historic offences and all this malarkey. “You know, £60m I saw was being spaffed up a wall on some investigation into historic child abuse and all this kind of thing. I was thinking of in particular of the Saville creature and the tolerance of it by the great and the good at the BBC. I was also thinking of a former work colleague who was sexually harassed by her boss. Everything from texts, emails and phone calls to trapping her in rooms etc. When this man was finally called to account, he was retired early on a full pension, albeit at a grade lower - his ‘punishment’. She was forced out of her job. Easy solution, job done. Nice and tidy. He should have been reported to the police and dismissed, but nobody had the will or the courage to do what was right. I gather he went on to do stuff for the church.

I think there’s a difference between when most people realised abusing kids was wrong and the point in time when the authorities became prepared to do something about it. Sadly, in the latter case I think it’s only in the last 10-15 years. For example, in the mid-80s Bill Wyman in his late 40s started dating Mandy Smith when she was 13, by all accounts started a sexual relationship with her when she was 14 and then went public with the relationship when she turned 16. There were plenty of newspaper headlines that had a pop at him, but nobody did anything about it. A family friend told me (probably around 1998/99) that they had worked at the BBC in the early 80s and it was common knowledge Saville was abusing kids on the premises, but everyone was too scared of losing their job if they said anything. I thought they were talking sh1t at the time but then 10-12 years later the truth comes out (very glad my letter to Jim’s Fix It in the mid-80s was never selected). Hell, I went to Copleston in the late 80s and remember when Stephen Benson started as a PE teacher there - it was only in 2013 that he got sent to jail for the things he did to some of the girls (which I had no idea about). But it is staggering to think that it’s only really since Saville died that people are starting to get punished for this sort of sh1t.
