This is why Ipswich haven’t achieved in 20 years.. 01:53 - Jan 10 with 5209 viewsFightingEssex

Makes the £5million a year Evans was willing to part with to be “competitive “ look absolutely embarrassing! How can you compete with this money?

It's obscene, and is a huge factor in so many of the ills in society today that goes way beyond just distorting the game we love.

We went into admin over 29million debt, and in the following 20 years that debt slowly crept up to 100million. Blackburn had already spent that by 1997.

We were punished for our piddly debt back in 2002, pushed into admin, forced to sell all our best players to get out of it, forced to sell the club to a faceless millionaire 5 years after that, meanwhile the debts these clubs must have must dwarf anything we ever lost.

There is no way we can ever compete again is there. Not unless we sell our soul for blood money.

Why is football, in particular the PL, responsible for anyone queuing at food banks?

In context of this thread I thought you were trying to find a link between the money spent by clubs and food banks. Apologies if this wasn’t the case.

It was simply an observation of what we as a society value most.

Why would a nurse queue at a food bank. Can’t live on £30k?

Indeed. It was just an example of the sickening wealth divide in this world. Of course a better example would be children digging through our rubbish in the 'third world'.

It was clear from the outset that the Premier League would lead to an elite and eliminate the chances of clubs like Ipswich ever winning it. In the 1970s I believe away clubs got one-third of the gate receipts of the home team, which went some way to evening things up, but that has long gone to the further benefit of the big clubs. Because I could see it coming I have never had a Sky subscription, not least because I could see no reason for my money going some of the way to enriching the larger clubs and paying the obscene wages of players.

But what was there before the PL and Sky? Rundown stadiums, mud piles as pitches and falling attendances.

Some of the worlds best players wouldn’t have gone anywhere near to England and most of the younger generation of good ‘English players’ would be playing in Spain, Germany, Italy etc.

Yes, the PL has gone too far one way but let’s not kid ourselves that it was great before because it wasn’t.

The average salary for a Nurse is £31,000 gross per year (£2,000 net per month), which is £1,400 (+5%) higher than the UK's national average salary. Given many of us live on much less than that and aren't having to use foodbanks I worry about how the money is being spent. I work in a warehouse for less than that and have never used a foodbank either. Even so, that's absolutely nothing to do with the Premier League! If people want a better NHS they will have to vote to pay more taxes, they don't so won't. Moving on.

As someone who started watching Ipswich in 1969, I only have fond memories of the Robson era and think things were great then. The football we played in the late 70s and early 80s was as good as anything these days, and we didn't need the Premier League to sign two Dutchmen.

Indeed, 1983 was a watershed year, Up until then, home clubs had to give 20% of gate receipts to the visitors. This was in response to the first murmurings about the elite clubs forming a breakaway league. TV revenue was minimal at the time so the move was significant. This process has gradually continued e.g. more of the PL TV money goes to the big clubs, but the PL does distribute its money far more evenly than most European leagues.
