Their second goal? 19:51 - Jan 15 with 1932 viewsnorfsufblue

Anyone else think their fella was offside when ball played up to him and despite no touching it affected Edmundson so in effect was active?... I know its straw clutching but I'd rather be chasing 1 goal at that stage than 2??

He was offside from the first ball, but I don't think he'd be classed as interfering under the current interpretation of the rules. When Edmundson plays it we're into another "phase of play".

Anyone else think had our defender not passed it backwards for the umpteenth time, they’d not have had the opportunity to score against us?

But he did go towards Edmundson to make him play it.... in otherwords he got an advantage from being in an offside position.... just thought it looked obviously wrong

A lot about it looks obviously wrong. Especially the way Edmondson looks around for the player and then plays it exactly where he has gone to. A mental aberration. Here's hoping it is his only mistake in a Town shirt.

I think he's clever. Does just enough to make Edmundson think about his presence without ever attempting to play the ball.

It seemed to me like Edmundson got caught between thinking he should let Afolayan play it (and therefore be called offside) and just dealing with it (at which point Afolayan is onside again). Distracts him enough to do something stupid.

No, because although Wolfenden steps up, but when the ball is played, he’s playing him on.

Defender clearly has to deal with him and he clearly gains an advantage.

If that is not offside, then the rule is wrong.

Nothing in Law 11 about "gaining an advantage".

"A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:

1. playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
interfering with an opponent by:
2. preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
3. challenging an opponent for the ball or
4. clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
5. making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball"

You could make an argument for number 5, but equally Edmundson is perfectly free to play the ball.

If "gaining an advantage" is a criteria then our 3rd against Gillingham should also be offside (Bonne's offside from Aluko's pass and is therefore closer to goal to receive Penney's).

Nothing wrong with the law stipulating you have to actually be trying to play the ball to be offside. We've absolutely nothing to feel hard done by about here, Edmundson's made an error from the absolute minimum of engagement from Afolayan. If Bonne had done it at the other end we'd be talking about how clever it was.

Actually after watching it again I take on board all the comments and it was a bad mistake by Edmundson who should have just turned and thumped it upfield or out of play but what I did overlook was Donacians horrendous pass that was intercepted to put him in that position...... that was an awful error!

The old rule worked fine. Interfering with play being the criteria.

Idiots were unabel to cope with it, so it has become increasingly codified and tinkered with to the point of absurdity. See also: handball.
