I think I’d feel cheated if we went up this season 13:03 - Feb 7 with 2313 viewsCopfordBlue

We’ve been promoted twice in all the years I’ve supported us. Both times (92 and 2000) it’s felt fully deserved and come at the end of a really enjoyable season. Seasons that 20, 30 years on there is so much to look back on and remember fondly.

I know we need to get back to the championship and that if we can somehow sneak into and then win the play offs we need to do so (and regardless of what I am saying now winning at Wembley would be special). I want to be confident though that the team that gets promoted have shown enough during the season that there are grounds to be optimistic that we can hold our own in a higher league. I don’t have that sense about our squad at the moment. I think if we went up we’d come straight down and that in the long term another season in league one would give McKenna the time he needs to build a championship quality side.

I’m sure I am very much in the minority with this view!

If we make the play-offs from here it'll be a bloody miracle and we'd absolutely deserve a shot at promotion.

It's much much easier to build a Championship side in the Championship than it is in League One. You have a bigger budget, you can recruit better players, you can sell your players for more money.

It’s a fair point that we’re going to have to special between now and the end of April to make the play offs and so were it to happen i may feel differently (although not if there are too many scratchy wins like Saturday). I’m not sure I agree that it’s easier to build when you’re in the championship although again it’s a valid point about recruitment being easier.

It's 22 years since we last achieved a promotion from any league - the second worst record of the current 72 EFL clubs.
We are the very definition of beggars not being choosers.

Clubs get promoted because, after forty or so matches they have proved to be better than other teams.

You can’t build a championship team in L1. Players aren’t interested in projects -ok you might get one or two players dropping down a division but not an entire squad or first eleven.

Add in that we are one of only a handful of clubs to have never played at the new Wembley -

We've been making this rebuilding argument for about the last 20 years. It hasn't worked then and it's not going to work now. If we go up we need big reinvestment. That's not going to change with another year in league one.

Truly impaired.

Once promoted, we only need to avoid finishing in the bottom three the first season. We don't instantly have to possess a team challenging for the top six in that division.

IMO that won't be as hard as some are predicting. There'll be the usual collection of strugglers, the other teams who've come up and maybe even a former Prem side in freefall. We'll have momentum from winning the playoffs, plus the club already has the infrastructure, expectation, history and financial clout to fit in the Championship. It will feel we are back in a rightful place, not interlopers daring to punch above our weight. Even the Manager hails from a higher level, rather than being some L1 stalwart.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Quite. Our midfield would look a good deal stronger if we'd been adding Morsy to Downes and Dozzell, rather than them exchanging them, for instance.

If we do make the playoffs and win them then the fact that we will have financial muscle ‘should’ be enough to ensure that we won’t finish in the bottom three.

If we were to get promoted from here it would be one of the most remarkable turn arounds and be fully deserved - and one hell of a party!

It will feel deserved because we'd basically be winning every week - feel good factor will come flooding in and we will have a manager with a win ratio far greater than 50%!!

Never would you feel cheated and if you did - you're weird ;)

I suspect that Downes was off regardless last summer, through combination of PL interest and Lambert being so utterly useless but with McKenna coming in, there's a strong sense of a missed opportunity with Dozzell. There was a lad who was crying out for some proper structure, motivation and actual coaching.

I read "PL" as Paul Lambert and got confused.

And what a damning indictment of our situation these days that anyone would ever jump to that rather than Premier League.

There’s no way we’re going up but I doubt West Ham fans are crying about the season they mugged us off in the playoffs to go up despite being yards behind us in points…

League One is absolutely dire and the quickest way out possible has to be achieved.

I definitely wouldn't. Suffered enough as a Town fans for over a decade, so feel we deserve a break.

Is that the same financial muscle that should have ensured that we won promotion this season? ;)

I kind of agree - but you have to remember this is the third division with a pretty low bar. I’d also point out that the 2000 promotion team came third and was probably a better team than those coming first and second - and that after years of near misses to worse teams

I’m not a big fan of the play offs as they reward mediocrity and encourage supporters to look on sixth place as a success rather than upper mid-table and then get overexcited about coming third - even if they came sixth.

I see the main problem being McKenna getting headhunted within a year IF Town go up - perhaps even if they don’t. And I doubt Ashton will get lucky twice.

For the sake of argument if McKenna was headhunted this time next year then that’ll prove that he is doing a very good job here. Possibly cross that bridge if or when that happens.

The playoffs are brilliant.

Agree on Dozzell. Can't see that Downes would've been especially anxious to leave if we'd been a Championship side with a persuasive manager, offering him a big wage increase. It's only Swansea he went to.
