Very impressive tech. The amount of smoke they put out of the engines is notable though.

Two things.

1) Headline on that is very provocative, "Additional four massive US Air-Force B52 bombers arrive in UK as reports of imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine surface"

2) Who is the tw*t in the green coat on 3:05 squatting in the middle of a live road to get a shot?

1 It is not unconnected. Of course the headline sensationalises and uses exaggerative language. That's the nature of headlines and it is not misleading. They have arrived due to the escalating tension.

2 Got a few beeps didn't he? I wonder why he thought it was any better than taking a pic from the side of the road like everyone else.

First flew nearly 70 years ago, the engines are very primitive. They will only start getting modern engines in the next few years.

Come on Chelters, don't say you haven't put yourself in the way to get the perfect pic? :-)

yes its a very common USAF jet signature, I think those engines are probably old enough to still use water injection for cooling & the way they premix of the fuel with air is different to how its done now,and both things results in unburnt fuel coming out as smoke trails.

but its only on high engine loads for take off & landing, the cruising phase which is 90% of the flight its fine, which is why theyve taken so long to get around to deciding to fix it as tech change to be less smoky comes with a trade off of more complex engines, which impacts reliability and the cost.

I did think there is no way they could have been giving that amount of emissions all the way across the Atlantic on one fuel load. That explains it. Thanks. I also wonder how much difference the parachute makes to the landing distance required. It looks fairly small in comparison to the plane itself but I guess it will make a reasonable difference.

It looked to me like the little wheels on their silly bendy wings were actually wider apart than the width of the runway. Wonder what would happen if one of them went down a rabbit hole?

Not in a way that might get me killed. Although Peter Crouch isn’t keen on me.

Neither of them touched the ground in any of the landings did they? I think the idea of them is to try to protect the wing tips in the event that the ground is especially uneven or the landing is far enough away from perfect.
