What's wrong with smart motorways (other than the obvious aversion some people have to anything 'smart')?

That hustings member comment seems nonsensical: "They also cause long delays because they close lanes off when there's a breakdown... so will you restore hard shoulders to all motorways". There are queues on the odd occasion a lane is closed in response to an actual breakdown, so let's close the lanes permanently just in case there's a breakdown. Genius logic there

I suspect the motorways are smarter than the average Tory hustings attendee.

The big issue is doing away with the hard shoulder at peak times. It does seem to be a legitimate concern.
In theory the cameras/detection equipment spot a broken down car and close the lane, but there have been a number of incidents where that didn't work with very dangerous consequences.

I'd be fine with that if it could be proven to save lives, but I don't think that's where that person was coming from. They were framing it in terms of saving time.

Presumably there's a huge amount of data and studies out there looking at safety. The downside of a free for all is we're so much more crowded than some of the other roads in Europe that have higher speed limits. france just brought their's down on single carriageways too, and are slower than us when it's wet. Germany can be downright scary.

PS - not that I wouldn't mind it being raised to 80 at times. Maybe the answer is more smart motorways/variable speed limits, with 80 when it's quiet and then lower limits when it's busy or bad weather. We're going the other way here in Wales - it's 50 now on some stretches of motorway for air quality reasons, and 30 is going to drop to 20 next year (that'll be hard).

I agree with all that.

The real answer is to encourage people to get off the roads by investing properly in serious integrated public transport.

And the M4 from the bridge to beyond Cardiff is dreadful!

I drive the motorways of England and Wales for 5 days nearly every week. The volume of traffic is horrendous in parts. Take the M25 for instance. Four lanes yet at certain times comes to a standstill because of the volume of traffic. Same with the M6. 70mph is plenty for our motorways. Anything higher than that is suicide. Having said that some of the restrictions at the moment are ridiculous. The M4 out of London is restricted to 60mph for about ten miles yet there is nothing to warrant it. That frustrates motorists like hell.

Large stretches of the M5 are the same. Frequent concertinaing down to walking pace and below.

Yea, Mrs LittleTown lived in Port Talbot for a while as a youngster, she laughed out loud as we saw that sign last week whilst on our way to see friends in Llandeilo.

Nobody seemed bothered about the air quality when I drove past Port Talbot.
