Last night they were trying to write it off as a "verbal tick" which he uses when he wants to move the conversation along.

Either way the optics are awful.

Someone I worked with back in the 80's had a nervous laugh when they were embarrassed or asked an awkward question.
When a colleague told us his wife had cancer she giggled.
The optics, as you say, were awful.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

I might be naïve here…and believe me I really want it to be as withering a reaction to her presence as it initially seems…but she’s speaking over a few of his words (which you’d hope would be high treason in itself) when she says “lovely to see you again”, and doesn’t it sound a bit like he might be saying something like “sorry to bring you back again…dear oh dear”? Which if accurate would rather change the tone…

I think it goes in the opposite direction, are these meetings usually filmed ? I know the meat of these talks remain private but to even disclose the introduction seems odd. In other words this smacks of a leak, but by who ? Disgruntled Conservatives who want to see Truss gone or, and I hardly dare type this, a friend of the Monarch who is privy to a deep dissatisfaction about the refusal to attend CoP27...

I interpreted it as "Oh Christ. Do I really have to give my time to you"?
