I think we can be proud to be so high up on this chart on 08:15 - Oct 20 with 2054 views | DJR | That's fantastic. It shows just how good we were at one time, especially as the figures don't reflect the fact there were fewer European places way back then. Sadly,, I imagine that very few outside Suffolk below 45 would even be aware of it.

I was amazed to see Newcastle above us though . I can’t remember the last time they were ever in Europe! …and as if we even needed confirmation of the yella filth’s standing in the game , well there it is for all to see.

I think we can be proud to be so high up on this chart on 12:30 - Oct 20 with 1765 views | DJR | As the vast majority of our European appearances were over about a 10 year period which straddled the 70s and 80s, this chart is proof that, after Liverpool, we were the second best team in England during that period. Two trophies were sadly not reflective of just how good we were.

Way before my time and even I find it gutting that we didn't win the league.

Newcastle won the 1968/69 Inter-cities Fairs Cup (a sort of pre-cursor to the UEFA Cup).

Sir Bobby had them in the CL for a few years.

Had it existed, we would have been in the CL in virtually every season back in Bobby Robson's days. And I have always maintained that the Uefa Cup was harder to win, since it involved two or three clubs from the big leagues, who were often more likely to be challenging for the league than last season's winners. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

What was our record for European qualification during that period? Something like 8 years out of 9 (I'll let someone else look it up). Quite remarkable really, especially when, as someone else said, only 5 or so clubs qualified each year (one for the European Cup, one Cup Winners Cup and three for the Uefa Cup). We would have had a 100% continuous record as well if Manure had beaten Southampton in the 1976 Cup Final. I've never forgiven them for that!

It was a pretty impressive 9 years out of 10. Only Liverpool did better, and I don't think any other club matched our record.

And virtually all the towns/cities below us are much bigger than us in population terms which makes our achievement even more awesome.

In fairness to them, and I appreciate that this will get a massive eye roll in some quarters, they were done out of two potential UEFA Cup runs by the Heysel ban. I guess this is their equivalent to "If only 3 points had been awarded for a win in 1974/75."
