(That made sense to me when I started typing it!)

What is it that happens to people when they start to get rich? on 09:02 - Nov 6 with 1695 views | Guthrum | Wealth = status. Has always been so. Or, at least, the ability to project wealth. Which is how Donald Trump's debt-laden, partially imaginary riches have fuelled his lifestyle and propelled him into the White House. In the past, bankruptcy was described as "ruin", because it not only had a financial, but a social impact as well.

So it's the ego in control, not the rational part of the psyche. Obvious when you put it that way, but sometimes hard to remember for me and why I tend to get a bit repetitive on here. I'm not a religious person, but I happened to catch a snippet of 'the religion' on R4 this morning, and some lass was saying that the reason we are not, en masse, facing up to global heating is that we tend to appeal to the rational in people with pesky scientific data and 'facts'. She was saying we need to appeal to people's values - I guess that means saying things like, "you are killing your children and grandchildren by over-consuming"?

Yes, altho you are then fighting against emotive responses (You're taking away my comforts and security!). It then just becomes a polarised battle of hyperbole as the emotive arms-race runs out of control. Which is already a problem in the climate debate (and others). Not to mention that emotive triggers are even easier to manipulate than facts and figures. [Post edited 6 Nov 2022 9:34]

Homo Sapiens really was the greatest misnomer of all, was it not.

A person who has displayed nothing but self interest above all, including personal relationships should then turn out to be solely interested in money. You'll be telling me he lied habitually next Still, those figures will bring comfort to the red wallers who voted for him. A bit like being conned by some idiotic scam off the internet promising you millions from some Nigerian bank

I’d have thought it’s of national interest, because by gathering support for his bid he effectively denied the opportunity for someone else to oppose Sunak and therefore affected who we got as a PM.

people hypothesising about someone else's motivation based upon hypothetical forecasts of variations in their future income isn't serious journalism. it's heavy on editorial assumptions and devoid of evidence.

Seems to evidence as put up by associates and entertainment agencies.. However, in line with your post I shall avoid "hypothesising about someone else's motivation " - ie 'defending' probably the most incompetent PM in UK history, and one of the most self serving and odious politicians in living memory.
What is it that happens to people when they start to get rich? on 22:50 - Nov 6 with 976 views | factual_blue | I saw one of my friends the other Friday in the regular Meeting Of The Old Gits Putting The World Right. He was telling us all about the friends they had to stay the preceding weekend. The visitor was an old school friend of my mate, and had made a fortune as a steel stockholder. They'd come down to Suffolk in the Aston Martin, rather than the day-to-day Beamer. Or the Maserati. Or the car they've got 'just to take the dogs out'. My mate clearly thought he was a great bloke. Mrs Factual the same week met our friend's wife, who just moaned about what a money-obsessed t.wat her husband's old schoolfriend was; 'that Harry Enfield 'I've got considerably more money that you' character' was the description.

This is probably an urban myth. I recall hearing that when Singapore decided to get their population to quit smoking they got the teachers to tell the kids to go home and ask their parents "Daddy,Mummy - why are you killing me?"
