What would be your plan B 10:46 - Nov 13 with 2025 viewsportmanroadblue

Everyone mentioning a Plan B, what would yours be? I know there are prob plan B, C, D and even E if you went for all scenarios, but lets say against a park the bus team and a team thats as good as us and attacks.

I used to get narked that we could play lovely football for 90 mins trying to score the perfect goal and be undone by a set piece. We've rectified that this season by chipping in with plenty of goals from FK's and corners. Those 'free' goals Mick used to talk about.

Other than that, I think the philosophy is the right one. We stick to our principles, we play good passing football and we try to draw teams out and create space for ourselves (KMc has already disclosed this as a tactic when discussing passing in our third). And for the most part, it works - we have the highest possession, most shots and concede the fewest chances in the league. We're 2nd in goals scored.

What that tells us is we are conceding from a high % of chances, which either means we're giving away howlers or the keeper is letting too many in.

When we stop creating chances I'll be more worried. I was more concerned after Lincoln, where we had an identical situation and just didn't threaten enough. Next training session on shooting through a crowded box please, Keiran.

We saw a plan B very late on, bring a big defender on and throw him up front in the box and hope something happens. Haven't seen that plan for years.

And yet we didn't really put the ball on his head did we?

We kept trying to work the ball wide and put in low crosses for a tap in. It made little sense to me.

Putting a big defender in the box was Plan B. Putting in crosses for him to head would be Plan C.

These teams would much rather we looked to lump the ball onto a big man's head. We were creating plenty of chances yesterday, our approach is/was the right one, we just couldn't apply the finishing touch. When you have 29 shots on goal you are doing something right.

I wouldn’t change the plan if like yesterday we were all over them and creating chances for fun.

But more based on the season as a whole, I think we sometimes let the tempo and the threat drop by trying to be too tippy-tappy and clever. We should be mixing it up a bit more and playing a few crosses in earlier. Getting the ball into the danger zone a bit more often and looking to pick up the pieces would give the defenders much more to worry about.

A player like Ahadme but probably a more experienced version in January would help with this. Ladapo is a great all-rounder for Plan A but I think a physical trouble-maker in the box, who preferably wants balls to attack, makes sense when teams start to pack the defence.

When you have 29 shots but only 4 of those are on target you are doing something wrong.

Well clearly, but that isn't a problem of the system or the approach. It is poor finishing. If we weren't creating chances I would agree but we had enough of them to win 3 games yesterday.

Like Rotherham last year, we could do with a Michael Smith as well as a Ladapo.

Exactly. The only option for plan B may be a new player or two. It’s doesn’t matter how you change the system if we can’t convert any chances we make. The only thing I’d like us to do differently is actually attack those crosses. I’ve lost count of the times we whip balls across and there’s nobody there. Either carry on doing the same and attack the 6 yard box, or stop looking to cross and focus on pullbacks instead to everyone queuing up on the edge of the box.

^^^this.
Spot on. Move the ball quicker. Put in some (not all a la hoofball) crosses earlier, shoot more often from 20-25 yards. Mix the play up.
On a different note, I know we have scored more from corners so 5his might sound peevish but I still think delivery is very patchy and we don't attack the ball with enough conviction (with the slight exception of Edmundson).

I don't think we need different plans. when you create 29 shots on goal you don't need to be thinking about different ways to create those chances. what you need is someone to put the ball away. keep a cool head and slot it in. camera actually was much cooler in his chance but was very unlucky to see it hit the post.

I would try Chaplin up front with Ladapo with Edwards orHumphries I’m behind. Also against the 75% possession teams at home back four of KVY, WOLF, Burgess, Davis.

The only Muff in Town.

You have to wonder why we put him on then don't you?

29 shots perhaps but they weren't exactly golden chances were they? I don't think it's as simple as saying we need to better at finishing. I never really felt like we'd score despite how much ball around the box we had.

Off the top of my head - we hit the bar and post from about 10 yards out, Ladapo headed straight at the keeper from 6 yards out (with two rebounds from that which we should have scored), Woolfy put a free header over from about 6 yards out, Humphreys should have scored in the first half, Davis missed a free header from well inside the box in the first half as well.

Numerous balls flashed across the box begging for someone to get on the end of it. We created plenty. On another day we’d have scored 4/5.

Yeah but apart from that?

You're probably right. We don't dish out as many 4/5-0s as we maybe should. Striker or two definitely on the January wish list.

"Shots blocked by another player, who is not the last-man, are not counted as shots on target" according to Opta's definitions. I'm not sure this 4 on target figure is completely reflective.

*Just to add I don't know what metrics the BBC use but 4 does seem very low for the number of shots we had blocked away in the box.

I think often if the ball had miraculously gone through the blocker there was another blocker between them and the goal. Wouldn't count that as a shot on goal.
