Boxing day restaurant 22:36 - Dec 23 with 2849 views | northants | Hi, hope you can help me with some local knowledge please? Travelling down for the Oxford game from Rugby with the wife so would like to take her somewhere "nice" to eat as a thank you for coming with me. Tried to book bistro on the Quay but they are not open on boxing day.... Now worried about other places not opening....any advice gratefully received on where will be open to dine on boxing day evening of a decent standard to impress Mrs Northants!?

Staying at Premier Inn quayside and will be having a couple of beers before the game so central ipswich really. Heard the waterfront area is nice so looking forward to walking around and possibly dining here but anywhere mid to upper range in Central Ipswich would get me some points in the bag!

Ha ha I was thinking the same but a posh meal is my insurance policy if it goes a bit "wycombey"!

'The Waterfront', further along the, erm, waterfront, is superior in my opinion. Mariners (the boat) is also very good. I was also very impressed with Cult Cafe for a cooked brekkie so that may be worth a shout for a later meal, although not sure if it hits the 'nice' criterion. Well, it is 'nice', but I mean is it posh enough. If curry counts as nice then you can't go far wrong with Zaika, which is slightly off the waterfront but easily walkable. Takayama (also off the waterfront) is also meant to be very nice, which is like an upmarket, independent Wagamama (sorry if anyone bristles at that comparison!). All this being said, I have absolutely no idea if any of these will be open on Monday, so this could all be the square root of b*gger all use to you! Enjoy the game and your trip!

I'd go with this, my two experiences there were good and it definitely has the swank factor | | | | Login to get fewer ads

100% this if 'impressing' is important. Never been disappointed there, and location/ambiance are great.

Ha you're right there, a venue is only as good as the standard of clientele allowed to attend....to vaguely quote the marx brothers! Some great shouts so far so thanks to all...Will call a couple of venues later

Went once expecting a meal at the bistro, greeted by the new decor and ownership - and have never been since. Used to be a regular lunch per game meal at the bistro, but would t ever go there again since it changed name, ownership and menu.
