If all fit and well, is our current squad good enough to secure promotion? 12:52 - Jan 5 with 1335 views | ringwoodblue | Based on his track record, I have tremendous faith in Ashton’s ability to get deals done and bring in the right calibre of players but as we all know the Jan transfer window is very tricky and there’s lots of circumstances outside his/the club’s control that might prevent us getting the players we are targeting or even those that are regarded as second choices. So my question is, if the worst comes to the worst, are the current squad good enough to secure promotion either automatically or through the playoffs? Personally I think they are.

If all fit and well, is our current squad good enough to secure promotion? on 13:00 - Jan 5 with 1263 views | jayessess | They've accumulated 2ppg for 25 games, so I'd say so. But I think we'd need to improve the overall level of quality to proof ourselves against (a) continuing not getting much luck with officials or fine margins in general (b) both Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth continuing to be this relentless.

If if the injuries hadn’t played out the way they had we may have had more points now than we do, certain players wouldn’t have been jaded and could be playing at higher intensity level. I’m not sold that much of that would have completely overcome the low block, that said we were doing ok earlier in season when we had Harness, JJT and Aluko all fit but it’s been later that teams have literally parked the bus.

Doesn’t that depend on what the other teams do? Plymouth on course for over 100 points and Wednesday not that far behind. We may have to to accept that 92 points will not be enough this season. That said, I dont think it is reasonable to expect more from that from any team so if it is not enough, so be it.

That doesn't mean you don't look to build and strengthen the squad but if the worst does happen and we don't sign anyone - we still have more than enough to get promoted.

"Is the squad good enough to secure promotion?" and "Will the squad secure promotion?" are different questions for me. I think the squad is good enough to post a total that would put you in contention for the top two. It's shown that over 25 games. But the reality is that unless one of the top 3 drops-off (or accelerates further!) then someone is going to miss out because of random variables - because a potential last-minute winner went in or out off a post or because a referee gave/denied a penalty claim, that sort of thing.

Agree with this to an extent. Also think the mass substitutions aren't always a good idea.

Tho that is factoring in a number of injuries and a yellow card suspension. Which are pretty much inevitable, but that wasn't what the OP asked.

Thing is, we are usually not bringing on inferior players. What must it be like for a L1 defender who has been run ragged by Jackson, Chaplin and Burns for an hour, to suddenly have Harness, Ladapo and Edwards in their faces? We have 5 subs available, be daft not to use them.

I'm not sure Plymouth are on course for that, really. Eight of their ten games against teams currently in the top ten have been home fixtures, where they are very strong. They have struggled more on the road and have yet to visit a lot of the better teams. Plymouth's record against lower-half teams is very patchy.

If all fit and well, is our current squad good enough to secure promotion? on 15:22 - Jan 5 with 874 views | Westcountryblue | With Ball, Camara and TJJ out of the mix, i'd argue probably not. Ball gave us a physical presence and TJJ had the ability to pull something out of the bag. I think we need 4-5 players this window, perhaps even 6. McKenna will also have to make some difficult calls on his existing squad. e.g over players like Jackson.
