You could try changing the battery yourself if you are feeling brave. The tools/kit to get the back off are pretty cheap, as is a press to get it back on. The back may be screw on, but most are not.
The batteries themselves can be bought off eBay for no money. The batteries vary from watch to watch but what they are is stamped on them and visible with any magnifying glass. The internet will tell you their equivalents. |  | | |

Battery change for my TAG Heuer at Timpsons was £85. That covered battery, reseal and pressure test.
It also covers lifetime free replacements, with test etc etc.
The one-off cost would have been £50, so the lifetime offer was too good to miss. |  |

If you are going diving, agreed. By and large, the seal is just a cotton thin bit of rubber and as long as you are careful, I don’t see it as a problem.
I have one or two more valuable watches. Nothing special (a Longines, Seiko and a Victorinox), but these I’d take to a specialist. But for watches like say a Lorus, Henry, Adidas, etc I do myself. | | | |

Watch batteries cost £1.99p from Amazon. I changed three of my watches plus new straps for £12. I have two more which I can’t remove the back from. Have a go before you get totally ripped. The guy at Timpsons outside Sainsbury’s wanted £29 to just change one battery, I did it for £1.99p.

I haven't worn a watch since the 1990s - can't stand having the thing on my wrist.
If I think I'm going to need to know what time it is, I put a small piece of paper and a pencil in my pocket in the morning. When I meet someone wearing a watch I ask them what time it is and I write it down on the piece of paper. Then later on, when I need to know the time, I can simply get the piece of paper out of my pocket and have a look.
I seal the piece of paper with Rizlas, so it is 100000% waterproof, and I have a spare pack in my pocket in case I fancy a spliff. Then I don't care what time it is anyway. |  |

I have a few wind up watches, the best of which is a 47 year old Omega, but I rarely wear it. Automatic watches don’t need winding of course, but the most hassle free are solar catches. I like those. Citizen make some nice quality ones for not too much money, as do Seiko. | | | |

The problem with wind ups and automatics is they need to be serviced after a few years at a massive cost. I would love an omega seamaster but even if I had the money to buy one I wouldn't as I wouldn't be able to afford to service it every 3 to 5 years
