McKenna talking about the first goal 08:46 - Apr 2 with 2456 views | textbackup | Said how they practice count attacking in a zig zag so opposition can’t pen you in one area… In, say, 32/34 years of watching football I’ve never considered that to be a thing, he’s an actual genius isn’t he (albeit it sounds a simple idea!)

He knows and thinks of stuff the average candidate who's been around this level for years or worked his way up from below simply doesn't.

McKenna talking about the first goal on 09:55 - Apr 2 with 2147 views | Simonds92 | His football intelligence is very high and clearly he knows more about the game than all of us. The way we play around at the back to hopefully pull opposition players in and create what is almost a counter attack is a prime example. The zigzag thing however was something i was taught when i was about 12 years old, i dont think its particularly new age thinking.

It’s not but implementing it at speed is something else, and a big part of the way we setup now. We were so slow with the ball for a period towards the middle of this season and he’s obviously gone away and worked on this with the players. Basic when you step back but very rarely successfully implemented outside the premier league or top end of the championship.

I still cant get over the fact that i thought Paul Cook was the mutts nuts and we would win this league with him in charge

McKenna talking about the first goal on 11:25 - Apr 2 by BlueBadger | /edit for full context That's quite the turnaround you had really, going from being one of his biggest fans to being one of the board mafia responsible for getting him sacked. 'Hang your heads in fking shame… 20:27 - Dec 4 with 811 views Keaneish Mullet Gtsb Blue badger Bloots N2 Blue ITFC Joe …and the rest. Do you not understand that these forums have massive sway these days? You’ve killed it. We may go on to bigger better things, who knows? Your bitching and whining on here is picked up and has a massive ripple effect. Fking knobs the lot of you. For weeks you’ve been stamping your feet like little girls and it gets picked up when all you needed to do was ride it out for a bit. Pathetic. Cook always comes good, he always has done, talk to any Pompey, Wigan or Chesterfield fan. I’m in Pompey tonight and they’re all shaking their heads. Dkheads the lot of you. Happy to get banned on the back of this. You’re ridiculous. The ramifications are massive which may be placated with money but fk me; learn to kick a ball and know what you’re talking about before you lash out in anger. A massive shame and a massive shame on you. Cook is working hard. What are you doing other than idly pointing fingers and drawing on nonsense stats. Nothing but contempt for you lot and your baseless insights into football when you’ve never even kicked a ball. [Post edited 2 Apr 2023 12:05]

Haha I remember that rant. Can't think who it was though but it was TWTD that got him sacked apparently. At the time of his appointment i thought at last we had got it right. How wrong was I. [Post edited 2 Apr 2023 11:29]

i thought cook was sacked too early, especially when it looked like neil harris was the likely replacement. as soon as mckenna was linked, my trust for the new owner's process went up several notches, and it's only increased since. such a step up from the last seven managers!

One of the extra "rewards" of that goal for us (very) long-suffering fans was that it was the total antithesis of, & antidote to, the months of us spending 5 minutes passing the ball around 138 times in wee triangles in the final third, trying to tease out a 12 inch gap to shoot through!

Seems we've learned that if you're pinned in your corner area you don't need to pass it around the back to move forward. Just launch it to an area and relieve the pressure for a bit.

Keanish. Now there was a bloke with spot-on judgement about managers. Hated Mick. Loved Keane, Lambert and Cook.

It's definitely been evident that McKenna is still evolving his style over the past season and a bit. Can't wait to see how he adapts to the Championship.

He won't need to adapt. There's a reason we play like we do now. We're championship ready.

Two International wingers bang in form playing in Division 3, it's kind of unfair isn't it :)

You’re not alone. I hold my hand up - I thought he’d be excellent for us. There was no reason to think otherwise at the time. My first doubts arrived when he publicly blew up after the Wimbledon and Northampton shameful ‘efforts’. I understood the sentiments and agreed with what he said, but as manager he should have kept it in house. Tear the players up one to one or as a group but to do that in public in that way was wasteful, counter productive and destroyed his credibility with any players he wanted to keep. Next doubts: the bomb squad idea. Again, I thought some of the players deserved it but it was a wasteful way to go as it seemed a sure way of losing players we might have wanted to keep. His recruitment strategy was mud at the wall stuff. He clearly knows a good player but the approach had little chance of succeeding. You can’t build a team that way. By then, he felt wrong for where the club was going in every way. I supported him long into the autumn but it felt inevitable that he had to go when he did or seasons end. I still stand by my view that Cook is a good manager. His record says he is. He tried so hard but was in the end a poor fit for the club. It happens and I wish him well.
