To be fair even I, as a staunch republican, understand that the oath is voluntary- don’t see any harm in adults doing that if that’s what they wish. I would have an issue if school kids were ‘encouraged’ to do this whilst at school. The whole oath thing is simply dressed-up fun making people feel like they are there.
But I do hope that those swearing alliance are religious otherwise the whole ‘so help me God’ thing makes it just pointless. |  | | |
