Why Christian Walton deserved to be GK in the EFL L1 Team of the Season 08:50 - Apr 24 with 1123 viewsringwoodblue

Looking at the stats, Walton has 49% clean sheets and has conceded 0.67 goals per game
Michael Cooper has 38% clean sheets and conceded 0.95 goals per game. Sure, Cooper’ save percentage is 77% vs Walton’s 67% but that’s the only stat in Cooper’s favour. I know it’s not Cooper’s fault, but Walton has played a full season so he has maintained his form over a longer period. It’s a no brainier for me although I know I’m biased.

I do agree Schumacher deserved the L1 Manager award just shading it over McKenna.

Walton's clean sheets and fewer goals conceded are down to him having a better team in front of him. Cooper has been much busier as a keeper in that Plymouth side and prior to his injury he was keeping their actual goals conceded well below their xG against. He deserved to be in the team of the year.

Cooper was the better keeper this season, he's kept Plymouth in games on quite a few occasions.

Cooper for me has performed at a higher level this season than Walton, which is no slight on Walton, he has been excellent for us.

Random goalie stat from the D3D4 podcast - Tomas Holy has 20 clean sheets this season for Carlisle - very happy for the big Czech in the net

I get what you're saying, but whilst the save percentage is the only one in Cooper's favour that for me is the one I think deserves more value.

This isn't a criticism of Walton - who has been excellent - but we went through a spell where it didn't feel like he made many saves and it's difficult to remember many match-winning/saving performances particularly in the middle of the season.

Easiest way for me to think about it is would Plymouth have as many points with Walton as Cooper, and taking off the blue-tinted glasses I doubt they would have done so it's the right call for me.

Also, when you look at the stats below us and Barnsley have the lowest number of saves across the season (only 72) - suggesting how strong our defence is. Whereas Plymouth are the 3rd highest - so for me it's not even close tbf.
