I don't think he was ever a realistic prospect for either job. If you look at things dispassionately from the outside, what has he achieved so far? Getting Town out of League One with a big if not the biggest budget. Think tthe CEOs at those clubs would want more of a CV from their appointments. In a year's time if we do well in the Championship, then the situation might be different.

What has Maresca achieved? You could argue that Leicester have arguably gone with someone even less proven. His only role as a number 1 lasted 6 months and he failed pretty badly with Parma considering the players they had. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That's not an unfair point, although I suspect him being assistant manager with the outstanding team of the moment gives his profile a boost, particularly when Mikel Arteta was his predecessor and his subsequent success at Arsenal.

It's certainly a CV stamp that'll carry a lot of weight as it did for KM, he certainly wouldn't have made a move from joint assistant at Coventry to #1 at Leicester, the fact he knows what best in class looks like is probably attractive. That said he's only been in the role a year and you do wonder what influence 1 of about 4 assistant managers actually had on Cities fortunes. YDS experience, #2 experience at a top club, it's not a dissimilar CV to McKenna but at least KM has a promotion under his belt in the hot seat, and 18 months of impressive progression vs. Maresca who flopped at Parma. Objectively it feels as big if not a bigger punt than KM to me tbh. I think a part of it probably how easy KM would actually be to prize away. I think we're in a position now where he might look at fellow Championship clubs as having too much risk and not enough reward vs what he has now. And Premier League clubs probably won't look at him until he's proven something this season. So we're quite well insulated from that threat really. If we're 4th at Christmas and someone like Moyes leaves West Ham then it might be a different story.

I'd still think that sort of job might be too big for him to be seen as a contender at that stage. Maybe a Sheffield United or Forest but then they might not be that attractive to him as they'd presumably be in danger of dropping into the Championship and he'd be little better off - if he were better off at all - than he would have been had he stayed here.

Yeah it's a bit catch 22 in that he needs a successful season with us in the Championship, but then if we're successful enough it's a harder job to leave. The danger zone is probably Ipswich in about 8th, strong enough first season back to raise some eyebrows but likely not going up, and a vacancy at a PL club in 15th (a Palace) who are likely staying up but looking for a long term option. Either way good to know he's staying put for now. Here's hoping we can get some exciting signings over the line over the next few weeks.
