David Gauke 15:40 - Jul 22 with 2401 views | DJR | He was one of those thrown out of the Tory Party by Johnson, and I knew he went to Northgate. According to his entry on Wikipedia, he is described as a lifelong Ipswich Town supporter, something I didn't know.

Good to see. Along with Dominic Grieve (with whom I had dealings when I worked in the Civil Service) and Greg Clark (with whom I had an interesting discussion on my mother's doorstep just after he had been readmitted to the party), Gauke was one of the more decent Tory MPs of the post-Brexit period. So decent in fact that he had to be thrown out of the Tory party. [Post edited 22 Jul 2023 16:02]

Grieve was just such a good, decent, intelligent, reasonable and erudite man. That party under Johnson, in the Brexit and proroguing period, before we even got to Covid and Partygate, was just shameful. Will it ever recover? I don't care. But that purge of the decent was just a totally shameful and simultaneously shameless episode. If only the country could enjoy Johnson's comeuppance from a position of strength...

No place for competence in today's Tory party.

I was at sixth form with him and he was indeed a big Town fan and I remember a load of us from sixth form went together to an away game in the cup at Forest. He used to wear a hat but I don’t remember much else

I worked with some good Tory MEPs and local councillors (and a mayor!) in the early 2010s. They were horrified at the direction Cameron took them and could see the writing on the wall back then. They thought Johnson a clown of course. The sweetcorn quote is funny and largely accurate, but does the good ones a disservice too.

I'm no Tory, but one thing I did like about Dominic Grieve is that his political arguments did not rely on metaphors about poo, which frankly belong in the playground.

I didn't understand the metaphor but still think it is possible to describe a person as decent without supporting their views. The fact is that all of my friends and family support Labour, with one exception, but that exception is my best friend who is at heart a Tory. Of course, we used to have some blazing rows when we were younger, but I think that added to our friendship. As they say, opposites attract.
