Championship Spends 20:08 - Jul 24 with 3134 viewsFrimleyBlue

Just come across this. Amazing to see such low figures so close to the season beginning.

Of course plenty of window time left but still...

Does that mean Slicker came in on free then? Thought there might have been a small fee there?
Ins so far, as I understand it,
Taylor 1.5 initially
Hirst. 1.5 initially
Slicker. ?
Omari Hutchinson. Loan

I think there are three zeros missing from the first sentence in that Tweet.

[Edit} Also the stops between the numbers in the table should have been commas - or Fevs could just have stated £m at the start...

On the tweet I posted the OP clarified that where there were no media reported figures he'd left it as £0

Think it shows that most clubs in the division that dont have parachute payments are exercising more financial prudence than in the past. Historically I suspect that this division has seen more financial failures than any other.

That’s not surprising at all. Take the relegated clubs out of it (and anyone else with a large income from player sales) and nobody else is spending much at all. It’s been like this for a few seasons. Wages are so high you need parachute payments or player sales to be able to spend.

Yes, or at least the spending of clubs whilst in this division has ultimately caused failure, even if that failure finally occurred after they had limped on for a bit and got relegated to league one.

I think you're absolutely right that there's a bit more restraint amongst the "have nots". Derby's attitude to the Championship springs to mind.

This is old news. And shows why the standard in the Championship is lower than ever.
But also gives the best chance of promotion to any club able to invest like ITFC.

The idea that parachute payments are some form of largesse to be spent on improving the squad is well, well wide of the mark.

Transfer payments are typically spread over 3 or 4 years. Meaning that a PL relegated club can have huge instalments to meet. Likewise, they will have those players on high wages.

Those can be reduced by selling players where possible. However a look at relegated clubs and their outgoings the seasons after relegation will show that even with parachute payments many barely break even. That explains why so many ex PL clubs are languishing in the bottom half of the Championship. Not only able to bounce back, but to even make a challenge for a play off place.

Others, as with H'field, Wigan & Bolton slip down even further. -Players not offered a comparable wage will sit tight. Often being the ones not living up to the promise when first signed.

Those spending will mostly be the likes of Bristol City or Coventry who have sold a player for a large fee. That money takes a while to filter through, allowing other clubs to sell, then buy etc
