I didn't think the madness at Charlton last season would ever be repeated 13:12 - Aug 8 with 1700 views | Asa | However, given the new rules on time added on, I'd imagine this is something we are going to see a fair bit of now. Will be very interesting to see what this to the league tables, goal differences and individual match outcomes. Effectively you're adding up to 15 minutes a match on now, which is an additional sixth of a match. On that basis you could expect goals to add by a sixth, cards, chances, passes. Southampton breaking the passing record on Friday can't be a coincidence. How much easier does it suddenly become for a Man City to break our unwanted joint record by sticking 10 past someone? How long before 5-4 becomes the new 4-3 or 6-5 the new 5-4? How much harder does it make it for plucky underdogs to defend for their lives for 90 minutes, who now have to do so for another 15 on top. Psychologically, how do players hold leads and how to managers approach it. There's always an element of panic in injury times and players just wanting to get rid of the ball, but that all changes to a degree now. Something had to be done. Teams and their housery has got out of hand. We suffer loads from teams with a fraction of the budget wasting time and you can't blame them when it's allowed to go unpunished. Not often that we needed to waste time last season, but we took plenty of opportunities on Sunday, even when the time is being added on, it's still tactical to take a breather or relieve a period of pressure to regroup. Is it good for the fans? More value for money. More drama. Somewhat inconvenient for trains back for many, but there's always been potential there for that to be affected in a number of ways. Not sure what the solution is really, but would be interested to see what people think is the solution. Isn't it still only 56 minutes or so in play, so even with this whole 60 minute clock idea which would make the game unrecognisable you're adding yet more time on. Surely there must be a solution where subs are allowed, teams get 30 seconds to celebrate a goal but anything more is added on, injuries are added on and we find a happy medium? Edit - completely missed the separate, similar thread about a game clock. [Post edited 8 Aug 2023 13:19]

They did the same in the group stage of the Qatar World Cup.
I didn't think the madness at Charlton last season would ever be repeated on 13:40 - Aug 8 with 1598 views | bluefunk | There’s a simple answer to this, that already exists in the laws, start booking players for time wasting. It won’t take long before someone, eg a keeper, to get two yellows and put their team in the **** and then it will stop. They managed to eradicate the tackle from behind by doing this, they could easily stop time wasting the same way.

Our keeper was booked on Saturday for time wasting.

I'd give a medal to the first ref who just lets a team kick off again after a goal even if the other team is still doing their goal celebration. It's maybe unrealistic to ask fans to have a go at their own team for dragging out games, but I do think at evening matches there will be fans whose enjoyment is spoiled because they'll be worrying about whether they're going to have to leave before the end to get the last bus or train. When players steal twenty yards at a throw-in knowing full well they'll be sent back to try again, it should count as a foul throw and the throw should go to the other team. I wish interviewers would call out managers when they start congratulating themselves on their 'game management' . ("To be clear, by game management you mean time-wasting"). This 100%. And I'd have no problem with a match clock that is stopped when there is time wasting, or an injury or a substitution, in the same way it's done here in North America. Adding time at the end is becoming, and looking, even more stupid. If there's a stop in the game, stop the clock (that everyone in the ground can see) and then get things rolling again when it's sorted and only ever play a visual displayed 90 minutes...not 90 plus 15 mins or whatever. Accompany that with bookings for time wasting etc and it'll soon move along.

Indeed but as we have experienced on many occasions last year a keeper will get booked midway through the second half for time-wasting only to do exactly the same thing the next time he gets the ball with no consequence as the ref doesn't have the balls to send off a keeper for doing it. The thing is once a few keepers have been sent off for time-wasting teams will understand that it's just not worth the risk and will stop doing it.
I didn't think the madness at Charlton last season would ever be repeated on 14:09 - Aug 8 with 1436 views | Radlett_blue | So if there's 30 seconds left in a game when team A scores a late "winner", is it OK that the remaining 30 seconds are allowed to be wasted by celebration, so team B doesn't even get to kick off again? No perfect solution to this, but I remember the 2003 UEFA Cup final when Mourinho - managed Porto scored to make it 3-2 against Celtic in the second period of extra time & the goal "celebrations" seemed to last forever. I'm sure this was pre-planned.

I think any time wasted by goal celebrations should be added on regardless of whether it's in added-on time or normal time, it's only fair that if 13 minutes of added time were awarded that these are played. As mentioned by a previous poster give a team 30 seconds for their celebrations and then let the opposition kick off without them if they're not ready. Also, I think 30 seconds should be given for subs before play resumes if the departing player has not left and interferes with play then he is cautioned and the player coming on can only enter the field at the next break of play if the substitution isn't done in the 30 seconds. Rules like this would massively reduce time wasting as the team doing so would be disadvantaged rather than gaining an advantage as per the current rules. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
I didn't think the madness at Charlton last season would ever be repeated on 15:18 - Aug 8 with 1261 views | Stewart27 | The simple answer is to have a stadium clock, which stops when the ball is not in play and to take the entire decision out of the officials hands. It really is that simple.

How does that stop time-wasting? Games just get longer and longer, and more and more tedious. [Post edited 8 Aug 2023 15:20]

they are supposed to add an extra minute for every goal scored for that reason, regardless of when it's scored.
