I doubt that would have lead to a war even if they had shot down the RAF plane, it was clear that the second Russian pilot thought the first one was a lunatic.

It also feeds into the possible narrative that even if Putin ordered something crazy (like a nuclear strike) there could well be push back from the people pushing the button as they would know it was crazy.

The Russian equipment really is a level below what the West though, having one missile miss and one simply not work is incredibly poor.

What the reaction to the plane getting shot down would have been is an interesting thought. I guess you're probably right, but with 30 lives gone, there would have been a lot of pressure to do something / anything, especially with such a politically weak UK govt, with lots to gain from a retaliatory strike / switch to wartime governing.

There was a CIA agent who concluded would win neither the Cold War nor a shooting war when, back in the 1980s, the wash basin fell off the wall in his hotel bedroom.

Around the same a British businessman, convinced there the large wooden box under his hotel bed concealed a bugging device, started to dismantle the box.

The chandelier in the room below promptly fell to the floor.

We'd have accepted the explanation of a pilot who'd fired contrary to orders and moved on.

Nobody, except mad people, wants a NATO v Russia shooting war.

BTW, I don't regard Putin as mad in this context.

This is precisely why we need a negotiated end to the war asap before it goes global / nuclear.
