…being a “binman” is used as an insult. Is there something wrong with being a refuse collector? Personally I think it’s a fairly noble profession, without them doing their job we’d be in a bit of a mess. Literally. Do you reckon that norwich fans go up to their local “binmen” and give them abuse for doing their job? It’s offensive to refuse operatives. #istandwithbinmen

Marcus Stewart shirt saved from tip to be auctioned on 13:27 - Oct 10 with 2056 views | ChampionsofInnsbruck | Pretty sure I saw that on either vinted or marketplace with the owner demanding silly money for it, seems when people weren't willing to shell out for something they thought would be worth thousands he simply binned it. I have seen a few do the same when they realise the FA Cup 1978 Programme isn't worth anything because they printed about 100k of them, people think they have money on their hands and it's not even worth a £10ner to collectors!

They were quite funny, but not for the reasons they thought they were. Our current crop of 'not actually budgies, just pointing out the weaknesses' troll who are NOT budgies are rubbish.

No, he didn’t, he wore it from the start. The character, played by Warren Clarke, was called Brian Nunn and he was in charge of a refuse collecting crew in a Lovejoy episode called Bin Diving first shown in 1991. The story line was basically around how valuable things are thrown away. The binmen pick them out (‘scratching’) as a sideline. I seem to remember the episode starts with Eric getting accused of bin diving and finishes with Warren Clarke and his crew helping Lovejoy solve a theft from an elderly lady and the two snotty nosed perpetrators wind up in the back of the dustcart confessing to the police. To cut a long story short, the Norwich use of the term binmen stems from this episode. I think the nickname is quite funny. [Post edited 11 Oct 2023 8:49]
