Post Fulham thoughts 05:53 - Sep 4 with 2927 views | Kropotkin123 | Just watched the Fulham game on TownTV. Some impressive stuff. Interesting that our xg was low, but you could see that we'd do a few good passes and movement and then someone would be slightly behind in thought and movement. I think players will get better and things will sync a bit more. Really happy with the performance. For me the player of the season so far is Delap. His goal, whilst excellent, was also somewhat fortunate. Leno should have done better. It was all the other stuff he did. If he continues improving he will be awesome for us. Seeing Phillips and Cajuste on the pitch, knowing they can both get better is a crazy position to be in. Knowing players like Phillips have come here because of KM. But the real marvel is seeing that Morsey is more than at home next to the two of them. Morsy is the best captain since...? Holland? I'm not so sure maybe it goes back further. Who was the previous captain who was definitely better for us? Anyway, sorry I'm late to the party. Can't wait to see how we get on against Brighton.

This sounds daft but struck me at the time that he hits a ‘heavy’ ball, a bit like Simon Milton used to back in the day. Yes, the keeper might have done better, but it was a heck of a hit. The players are still settling and learning where each other are, but I was heartened to see them integrating at the speed they are. As for Morsy, I think he is the best Captain since Mills. He really drives the team. Tremendous player. Matt Holland maybe? He was terrific for a long period, but in getting out of the Championship we had more than one ‘Captain’ in that team with Mowbray and Magilton.

From what I've seen so far, we've recruited some brilliant players, but lots of examples in our games to date that highlight players still learning about their teammates' strengths and weaknesses. Just a couple... Against Wimbledon, when Burgess played one of his long passes between the Wimbledon LB and LCB. Davis would have read that and been on to it, but Townsend either didn't know Burgess could (or was going to) make that pass, so didn't make the run. Against Fulham, when Al-Hamadi got to the byline and cut the ball back onto Jack Clarke's left foot...cuts it to his right and we probably would have been celebrating a winning goal. It may take a bit longer for things to click as they have done the past 2 seasons (going from 4-5 signings to 12, and also moving up to the toughest division), but once they do I think we have enough to make it difficult for any team in the Prem. One thing in our favour this time around is we don't need to be in a 4-way battle to get 90+ points to have a successful season!

Post Fulham thoughts on 08:26 - Sep 4 with 2526 views | urbanblue | Great post. One thing that is really hitting me now, having been sad to see players leaving and our promotion winning squad being broken up, is how much I'm already falling in love with the new signings. Like you I'm excited and can't wait for the next game.
Post Fulham thoughts on 09:07 - Sep 4 with 2406 views | Swansea_Blue | Delap is a beast. His signature move of picking up the ball deep and driving forwards with it is causing all sorts of problems and in the end Fulham could only contain him by hacking him down. I don’t see how George gets back in ahead of him, but that’s a nice position to be in. He deserved a second on Saturday. Jack Clarke looks bright and at home in the PL too.

Post Fulham thoughts on 09:30 - Sep 4 with 2323 views | BloomBlue | The Delap goal goes in because the shot bends. When Delap hits it he hits it with a lot of power, the GK has to move at that point if he wants to save it. If the ball had stayed straight then it hits the hands directly, but it bends, which results in it hitting the GK's fingers rather than the palm, and the power of the shot prevents the GK getting enough on the ball. Must admit when I watched it live I thought the GK was at fault, but when watching the replays it's the fact the shot starts straight and then begins to bend at around 25% on its route to goal, hard for a GK to react at that stage. The fault was actually with the midfielders, defenders who let Delap basically run from the half way line without putting a tackle in

Hirst doesn't need to get back in ahead of him. McKenna keeps talking about his starters and finishers with regards to the front four - and in that regard, bringing on Hirst for Delap on 65 minutes (or vice versa occasionally) becomes a huge upgrade over bringing on Al-Hamedi (love him to bits, but he needs time to develop). A starting front four of Szmodics, Hutchison, Ogbene behind Delap - being replaced by Clarke, Broadhead, Burns behind Hirst (or indeed any combinations of the above) puts us in a great position and enables us to maintain our high press. Both Slot and Silva have both commented how effective our high press is - especially comparted to other promoted teams.

In terms of the overall squad, agreed it's a good place to be. I was just thinking that Hirst would probably like to still be first choice if he can be. The competition should be good though and with a bit of luck he'll only get better.

Indeed. That Burgess pass stuck out for me, too. Yet we still managed to get a draw against a team expected to be comfortably mid-table. And we've scored in all bar the first fixture. Which bodes well for when the players have got used to one another.

Is there not a school of thought that says he did well to get anything on it? If he hadn't touched it at all we wouldn't be putting it down as a mistake. Not saying it's wrong, just always makes me laugh.

Was going to post best captain since Mills too. It's no slight on Holland, just that Morsy has been phenomenal. And not only his captaining, he's still finding space in possession, getting away from oppo players and driving the team forwards. He should be given the keys to the town.

That’s fair comment. When Hutchinson crashed that one past the Hull keeper end of last season, nobody said he should have got a hand to it. I thought Delap’s was one heck of a goal.

Delap also struck his penalty against Wimbledon with the kind of power and precision of a Kane penalty (not the one that flew over).
| Not a Mummy. Don't have short arms. |
