Missed this until today - just seen it on Sky cricket channel.

Sad news. I've never heard a bad word about Syd -the person, not the cricketer.
Not even by Somerset supporters such as myself.

Was literally about to post the same thing. Very emotional to watch.

Hope Gloucs go on to win this today (Somerset can have the CC title) and I hope Syd is able to stay till the end to see it.

Lawrence was genuinely terrifying as a fast bowler which given we'd seen the West Indians work us over for a decade, was a welcome addition to our toolbox. He was responsible for more than a few retired hurts including Phil Simmons who ended up having to have brain surgery.

Him and Devon Malcolm kind of jockeyed for that one spot that was available alongside the likes of Foster, DeFreitas, Lewis.

I'll never forget that horrific injury he got in New Zealand which basically ended his career.

So sad, my first thought as I read that was how the f**k is he 60, must be a typo.

Then I remembered I'm not that far off 60 either.

Good luck Syd

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

That's such a shame..that injury in NZ,wasn't it while fielding...something silly like the grass being different to the UK so attempting to slide field on his knee and expecting to slide and basically not sliding ?

I assume the abuse report is an accident ... although how you accidentally report it as abuse I don't know.

No that was Simon Jones with the fielding at the Gabba, which the Aussies apparently never did knowing the field conditions.

Syds was when he bowled and his full weight went through his landing leg and the knee basically just went nah not doing that, and that was his cricket playing career over.

I can't remember if they were showing it live or delayed highlights, I do remember the scream in pain he gave when it happened, and I can't imagine even back then they'd have shown it in full on tv

I'm sure it was an accident, happens every now and then.

The pictures of him with the trophy after Gloucestershire's win were very moving:

I can't actually access the article here but posting here in case it's of interest to anyone who can:
