That stat on MOTD2.... re lost points from winning positions.. 23:42 - Dec 8 with 1036 viewsnorfsufblue

15!.... obviously the Man City one is something anyone would expect after an early goal but.... 5th if we hang on to all those leads!!... it really shows how few bits of luck here and there and other fine margins could have changed both our fortunes and confidence levels.

Southampton have lost 11 points from winning positions.

It really doesnt mean much.

It means we can't see a game out due to fitness or lack of tatcical subs.

I'm surprised we've been ahead that many times......

The early season games we weren't ahead that long (Man City, Villa, Fulham).

Letting in late goals does seem to be a thing now. Yesterday just proved how fragile we are

Disagree it could well be an indicator of quite a lot.

Firstly - to lose points from winning position demonstrates the positives that the team has the capability to score/go in front - generally early so evidence of positive intent from the start.

Most teams will regularly concede goals at this level - it's the nature of playing against some of the best players in the world with probably about 5 or 6 of the top 20 clubs in Europe - that's not something that can be controlled unfortunately

The part worthy of pondering though is what Town can do differently and there are a couple of obvious ones - the players are fatiguing more in the Prem (to be expected) and whereas more established Prem teams have formidable bench strength that's not yet the case - That's a time and/or money solution and not really with McKenna's control

The one limitation I've noted from McKenna though (admittedly only through watching games on TV) is he seems a bit slow to react to what the opposition are doing in the latter part of the game - they press more chasing an equaliser/winner in various ways - some have simply gambled by pushing players further up the pitch (perhaps because they've noted fatigue), others change formation and/or personal but equally I think Prem coaching capability in game finds chinks in the armour as the game unfolds - a weakness to show someone line, one player less comfortable on ball etc and so he's targeted.

I would be confident that during the post game analysis McKenna can identify those nuances and work out what the counter measure could have been - I just don't think he has the time/support (perhaps experience) to do that in-game at this level (yet!?)

All that said there is an argument to say that after a third of the season a "close out" strategy should have been worked out more effectively to counter this - as simple slight formation tweak - going more direct at certain trigger points to give an attacker the chance to run at fewer defenders etc.

I'm no master tactician (that's probably come through quite clearly) and I'm sure MK and staff are looking at this all the time but I think it's folly to dismiss a key stat (Southampton obviously being stuck in relegation zone not being a coincidence) as "not meaning much"

Only six teams have scored first more often than Town. We have scored first as many times have Man City.

The more often you score first the more chances you have to drop points from a winning position.

That is a worrying trend and a classic characteristic of a relegation side

They highlighted that we are late on a lot of our closing down and smelling the danger etc, I would suggest that's partly down to tiredness

I can't fathom why it took till the 90th minute for us to make central midfield alterations though, that didn't make any sense in a game where we were getting overrun

Personally I'd have gone 5 at the back or in midfield and looked to get Cajuste and/or Phillips on there at the bare minimum really

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
