January window - can we even spend any money? 21:12 - Dec 8 with 1743 viewsIllinoisblue

No clue of what the rules/limits are. And who do we ship out to make room in the squad?

Think we need to focus on our loan allocations. Going to be hard to persuade people to sign permanently in January, especially if we don't start picking up more points.

Don't know if there is much point in keeping Phillips here beyond Christmas if he's just warming a bench for god knows how much a month.

I think we have to have next season in mind with our January transfer dealings. There is little point spending big now on players we cannot afford to keep if we go down. We may even end up cashing in on players in January if big bids come in.

If we were bidding £20mil on Latte Lath at the end of the last window then we've presumably got a decent amount of wiggle room, but will be hard to spend it if we look like going back down. Probably going to have to make use of what remaining loan space we have left.

Presumably will be fringe players going on loan to make room.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

....squad fillers out on loan, AAH, Mass, maybe Wolf, maybe Broadhead.

Get a CF and a RW in on loan, pay a portion of their wages. Won't cost too much.

Save the cash for next season and we can add it to the fees for Delap, Hutch and Davis.

Massive war chest for a record breaking season in the Champ.

Much more fun.

Agree, and loans will likely jump at the chance to play PL football, knowing they dont have to commit but that we dont have to commit to either.
We dont necessarily need to invest in more long-term options in this case.

I dont get the view on Phillips- before he got sent off/injured, he played really well at Brentford and against Leicester. Hes clearly one of the more talented players in the squad and doubtful we will be getting someone of that pedigree on loan again. I dont know why he hasnt played a minute in the last two games though, but hes going to be fit again soon and has a role to play- I dont see a need to send him back, assuming we can, purely so we can reduce our wage bill a bit, only to likely end up weaker anyway.

Agreed, not sure how much prem interest there would be in Hutch though. High potential player but hasn't really delivered in the PL yet and we would want big bucks for him.

We may have the benefit of keeping him to tear up the champ again, which would be nice.

We may have a few players who, currently, fall into that level between the Prem and Champ.

I can't see us losing too many players by choice if we go down.

I seriously doubt we can loan in a PL quality striker where it wouldn’t cost us much.

It might not have a long term liability, but whatever proportion of the wages we pay it will be a lot, plus no doubt a sizeable loan fee too.

I completely agree with that, if you look at the contracts for the summer signings there was a clear plan is sight. They were signed on long deals which means if we go down most still have 4 or 3 years left which means we are not under pressure to sell. This allows us a good chance to push to go straight back up but should we fail there is still enough in the deals to allow us to get some money back. The flip side is that should we get a big offer for say Delap it will be us that decides what is big enough to sell.

I thought we could buy, if we sold or shifted players out first. Is this the case ?

I can see us going back in for the Boro striker again, and maybe offer8mg Edmundson as part of that deal maybe. It was all but a done deal for that striker in August and the only reason they pulled the plug on us , apparently, was because they didn’t have time to get a replacement in. But I suspect they’d be ver6 happy to get that £20m from us for him….

Well we had a 20M bid turned down on deadline day and did no more business after that. I'd be amazed if we were not adding to the team with a few sensible additions that would be with us no matter what next year.

At an absolute minimum we need a RW/ CF. Wouldn't be at all surprised if we saw another GK come in to push Muric with a bit of Prem nouse. These mistakes have to stop.

I'd be opting for Tom Fellows from WBA and a few others who would compete and make the squad next year that bit better should the worst happen.
