ITFC kit nerds - question on Punch apparel tracksuit top 14:21 - Dec 12 with 1106 views | Illinoisblue | This is a bizarre tale…. My son is a Town fan (obvs) and all his school friends know this. One of these friends is getting dragged round a thrift store with his mum when he notices an Ipswich tracksuit top . It’s blue, zip up, with one thin white stripe on the sleeves and has an ITFC78 logo on the front. By Punch apparel standards it’s actually quite nice looking. Anyway, the friend texts my son with a pic of it and asks if he should buy it for him. Yes, of course. So he does. $6. Deal. Cool. Son wore it to school yesterday with black jeans and white Sambas. Atta boy. My son is telling me all this after the fact and my first thought is that this top might be something I myself had donated to the thrift store. But that can’t be right as I never give my old Town stuff away, even the stuff that no longer fits. So there must be another Town fan in the Midwest giving stuff away. And it magically found its way to another Town fan. The point of this rambling and not overly intersting tale… what years was Punch the kit/gear supplier?

ITFC kit nerds - question on Punch apparel tracksuit top on 14:56 - Dec 12 with 1017 views | ITFC_Forever | Core took over from Umbro after relegation in 1995, and Punch grew from that - I think the first Punch home kit was the one with white sleeves and the little horses on the sleeves launched in the summer of 1997. Although the second season of the blue-into-white fade might have been Punch, which would have been the cream and black away kit summer in 1996. I think we stopped with Punch in around 2007 when we went to Mitre.

If it’s gone accuse your partner of throwing it away. If you find it, wear it with pride, perhaps one arm will fit. Adopt your son’s friend.

Did Town own the Punch brand? I seem to remember David Sheepshanks referring to "ours" when talking about a Punch top he was wearing. It was usually very good quality.

I'm sure that's incorrect, for 86/87 through to 88/89, wasn't the white kit actually the away kit, with the red possibly a third kit - I don't remember the red being the first choice away kit?

Yes I know... I was referring to the link you put though, as it looks a decent resource of past kits - I was just questioning the accuracy of that period.

I think we did, yes. Or at least part own them. Now we’re selling 100,000 Umbro shirts. The game has changed

I believe the Punch gear was manufactured somewhere near Mansfield under licence from ITFC. There used to be a U8 team here in Nottingham all kitted out in the TXU or Powergen kit which was always a distraction when my son's team played them. Every now and again sample kit pops up in the odd charity shop. I've got a Mitre training top that I don't think ever made it to the first team, picked up BNWT for £3. I assume Mitre used the same factory as manufactured Punch. I'm sure someone on here will know the full commercial ins and outs of it. [Post edited 12 Dec 2024 19:29]
